Nuovo Vesuvio Happy Hour 8/6/03

Style conscious as the Milanese, they dressed in black and dressed to kill but prepared food like the Neapolitans.  An intentional effort was made to provide a rat pack atmosphere with the musical presence of Dean Martin and Frank Sinatra.  Not lost were aspects from “The Soprano’s” featuring Carmela and Tony O’Malley, now working at Nuovo Vesuvio BYC.  Artie and Charmaine Bucco please move over and make way for your new owners and operators.  Specialties of the house included homemade pesto, pasta with broccoli rabe and sausage, and a host of other Italian dishes.  The desert table featured Silvio Kelly and Carrado Hetterich dishing out gelato and tartufo to grateful guests.  The lovely ladies traveling through the room serving food were the essence of Meadow and Adriana, without a doubt.  In addition to the impressive menu, the circulating personalities were memorable and included: Sean and Kathy O’Malley, Ralph and Lisa Benzakein, Richard and Diane Caputi, John and Michele Hetterich, Dennis and Megan Kelly, Chuck O’Malley, Steve and Emily Gargano, Frank and Denise Fiorino, and Kirsten Dunnells.  Manning the sink to handle the dishes were Annie Greco and Karissa Calamari.

Annual Clambake / Lobster Feast: August 9, 2003

Despite heavy rain earlier in the day, prayers were answered and the weather cleared in time for the annual Clambake organized by Gary and Trudi Guarino.  Over 180 members and guests were treated to a seafood orgy.  An abundance of appetizers, clams on the half shell, steamed mussels, homemade clam chowder (Trudi’s secret family recipe), freshly cooked lobsters, corn, and chicken were served, complimented by Sam Adams Special Summer Ale on tap.  Dessert was double chocolate brownie sundaes and fruit salad.  All those calories were worked off dancing until midnight.  Kudos go to master lobster and mussel chef Bud Caputo, with assistance from Bob Maddocks and Dennis Faherty.  Working hard in the kitchen were Larry & Kathy Olsen, Jeff & Sharon Bieselin, Ken & Debbie Goodwin, Emil Nagel, and new members Andrew & Liza Sims.  Sean O’Malley and Chris Goodwin assisted at Ken’s Clam Shucking Shack.  Charged with the unenviable task of washing all those dishes and (yuck) pots were Lauren Goodwin, Lauren Olsen, and Lizzie Guarino.  After all the guests had left, the Lord couldn’t hold back any longer. The heavens opened up and the rain came down again!

WOMEN’S COMMITTEE- SUBMITTED BY IRENE MORRIS

The luncheon held on August 5th received rave reviews from the card crowd. Quiche, (from Our Daly Bread in Bay Shore), spinach salad and amaretto sundaes were enjoyed by all.  Not only did Mr. Daly make the quiches, he delivered and sliced them for us. Now that’s service!   Irene Morris had a super committee to work with; Grace Ricketts, Dot Hall, Judy Hangarter, Inez Poppe, Mary Grover, and Sandy Matamala.  Thanks ladies for a job well done.

The last luncheon of the season will be held on August 19th.  Please call Gail Askoff at 587-8440 if you haven't signed up yet. Hope to see you all there.

One thank you was omitted in the last newsletter's article about the fashion
show.  Charlie Spencer from Boyd-Spencer Funeral Home lent us a beautiful podium and some chairs.  Your contribution was greatly appreciated.

A check was mailed to the Suffolk Coalition Against Domestic Violence for $2293.  Once again, thanks to everyone who helped make this event as successful as it was.

NOTE FROM THE COMMODORE: There were many digital pictures taken of the event. They are posted on the big window on the porch if anyone would like to see them. If you recognize a picture and would like to have it E Mailed to you please go onto the BYC website and send an e-mail to the Commodore with your E Mail address. I will be happy to send whatever pictures you want.

Please NOTE: Some members have expressed an interest in improving the playground area.  Several people met on August 11 to discuss some preliminary ideas. More investigation is needed to explore some proposals. We have a diverse age group of youngsters and would like to provide some activities of interest for as many as possible in a limited space.

There will be another meeting of interested parents on Tuesday August 26thth @ 7 PM in the Club.

NOTE FROM THE COMMODORE:

The fall membership meeting will be held on Wednesday, September 12th . This meeting will be open to voting and non-voting members and shall provide open discussion of any topic of Club affairs and operations.

There will be specific items to be discussed at this meeting.  The Board needs your feedback on the following items to be voted upon at the Annual meeting in October:

·        A proposal to recognize e-mail as a valid form of communication with the membership. It is not meant to eliminate regular mail but could be considered an adjunct to the postal service.

·        A proposal to nominate past club manager Dan Robinson as an Honorary                      member of the BYC. Dan worked for the club for many years and is remembered    fondly for his past service.

·        A proposal to make membership of fifty (50) years entitled to free dues permanently. This year the Board of Directors declared in celebration of the one hundred year anniversary to give those members a one year sponsorship in appreciation of their past service to the BYC. The Board would like to make this permanent for those honoured this year and any members who reach this milestone in the future.

SAILINGsubmitted by Ken Goodwin

The Sailing Awards Dinner will be held on Thursday, August 21st from 7-10 PM.  Steak, baked potato, corn on the cob, salad and ice cream will be served.  The cost is $10.00 for parents, $5.00 for siblings and sailors eat for free.  It would be appreciated if those in the sailing program RSVP with Erin.  There is also a reservation sign up sheet in the manager’s office.

On a sad note:

The Babylon Yacht Club family would like to extend our condolences to the Aitken family and the Torrey family.

On August 2nd, long time members of the BYC, Greg and Kathy Aitken lost their daughter Cassy Jean. Casey, a beautiful young woman, spent many of her childhood days involved in activities here at the BYC. Her vivacious smile and kind spirit enhanced everything she did and touched all who knew her. She will be greatly missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with Greg, Kathy and her sister, Lindsey.

Also on August 2nd William Torrey, a past BYC member lost his long battle with cancer. Will was on the Board of Directors for several years and contributed in many ways during that time. Our condolences are extended to his parents, Bill and Joy and to his daughters Allie and Elizabeth.

REMINDER:  HOUSE RULES OF THE CLUB (SEE PAGE 38 AND 39 OF THE YEARBOOK)

As a reminder there will be No Smoking within the Clubhouse and the South porch on the 1st floor.  Additionally, adult supervision is required for all children on our docks and in the playground.

Life jackets are recommended for children on docks, especially if a parent is not there. One slip or an accidental push with a crab net can lead to a terrible accident. None of the kids like to be confined but please use common sense with your children on the dock.

The floating dock is not to be a launching pad for jet skis. Please use the area around the hoist, where the club boats are to change riders. It is dangerous to be jumping off the T- Dock into the bay with all the boat traffic around

There is to be no one with wet bathing suits going through the main clubhouse, a wet floor can be very dangerous. Use the locker area bathhouse facilities for changing bathing suits etc.
