South of the Border 7/19/03

The big enchilada night proceeded in great fashion and style as intended.  South of the Border attracted three hundred and thirty nine guests.  The senoritas that were the unsung heroes as usual prepared Rio Grande appetizers followed by a meal of black bean salad, corn bread, chili and spareribs.  Special thanks go to the Emiliano Zapata-like chef, John Montgomery, who provided the exceptional ribs.  The chili recipe came from a trip when Tom Crimi stayed with medical friends in Mexico City. Marguerites were made using Tom’s Mexico City recipe, especially enjoyed by the famous Mexican artist Diego Rivera of whom Tom Crimi is a great admirer.  The grand conquistador, Gerry Ryan, orchestrated the party as well as Cortes overtook the Aztecs.  Guests were well satisfied with drink, food and music provided until 1:00 AM.  All three hundred thirty nine guests truly appeared to enjoy the efforts of Gerry and Peggy Ryan, Fred and Trish Reimer, Tom and Carolyn Crimi, Pat and Denise Ryan, Ken and Patty Matthes, Bill and Catherine Hitter, Sean and Kathy O’Malley, Kathy McShane, Jamie and Kerry Allen, Chris and Beth Kelly, Tom and Chris McGowan. At the border gate Suzanne Greco and Lucille Nagel collected pesos.

After Guard Party – Joan St. John

The 100th birthday of the Babylon Yacht Club will be celebrated at the After Guard Party on Sunday August 17th from 4 to 7 PM. There will be an open bar, music by the Banjo – Aires, clams on the half shell, hors D’oeuvres, finger sandwiches, cake and coffee.  $10.00 per person: members and guests - Jackets and ties please.

Please note- Jerome Dunnells has graciously built a display cabinet on the wall as one walks into the kitchen. Historical documents will be displayed from the founding of the BYC and its formative years, such as the original membership list and deeds having to do with the first two locations of the club. We have even turned up an original flag from 1903 that will be displayed for this party only. After this event they will be put back in the safety deposit box to come out when, the 150th anniversary?

Clam Bake 8/9/03

Be prepared for on the spot cooking of lobsters by a previous head of state, Anthony Caputo. Trudi and Gary Guarino along with their crew will present another wonderful party as they have in the past.  Guarino’s have gotten so good at this, when retiring; plan to open a road side shack in Key West Florida.

Moore Happy Hour 6/25/03

Good vibrations filled the air.  It was almost as if the Beach Boys were there.  The beach theme happy hour hosted by Tom and Amy Moore, John and Sheila Spiezio, Steve and Kris Fontana, John and Michelle Hetterich, Maureen and Jim Miraval and Maria Caputo drew a crowd of 160 members.  The guilt-ridden men casually distributed trays of tasty titbits while the California girls working hard in the kitchen supplied the masses with food. It is well known that Brian Wilson’s favorite salad is summer salad featuring chopped cabbage, ramen noodles, and almonds in a light, tangy dressing. An all time favorite of the Wilson brothers and Mike Love is pulled pork as served at the happy hour.  All the guests had fun, fun, fun ‘til all the deserts had gone by the way.

Happy Hour July 23

This past happy hour was a Hollywood blast! The directors Leslie and Thomas Brophy along with their cast, Ginny & Jim Horan, Maryellen & John Cuiffo, Missy & Chris Carangi, Marygrace & John Gleason, Lisa & Ralf Benzakein, Diane Caputi and Carol & Bob Greene. All the extras had all they could eat of delicious hors d’oeuvres. The martini bar was a smash hit! The box office sold 130 tickets. The reviews were all 5 stars! Good Job!

Women’s Committee- submitted by Irene Morriss

Our third luncheon held this summer on July 22nd was great. Grace Ricketts and her fabulous committee; Rosemary Halpin, Pat Mack, Lucy Trumble, Mary Rinklin, Marilyn Winter, and Nan Hanaway treated us to seafood salad, melon, croissants, and ices with cookies. Delicious. The weather cooperated and a good time was had by all.  These ladies are organized!

Our next luncheon will be held on Aug. 5th.  Please call Irene Morris for reservations if you haven't signed up yet.  661-5133.

Fashion Show

Our first fashion show is now history but the memories linger on. Even the weather gods gave us a perfect evening. So many people did so much to make this event the huge success it was.

Suzie Heilpern worked tirelessly to make sure reservations and seating were perfect.  They were! Thanks go to Lessings for lending us 15 crisp white tablecloths.

Maggie Shaw, our own talented fashion coordinator, put together a beautiful fashion show. It’s a huge undertaking that took many hours of work.  Maggie did it all with style and grace. The models looked stunning, and did a great job strutting down the runway.  Thanks to Talbot’s, Exqus, Puddle Duck, Ann Taylor Loft, Fitness Incentive, Victoria Mc Millen, our wedding gown designer, and Linda, who sent two beautiful vintage gowns, for providing us with such terrific outfits. Jewelry was provided by Estelle Kay and accessories by Kelly Dall. These items really enhanced the model’s outfits. Paul Steinberg dazzled us with perfect piano music to accompany the models.  We had quite a few dressers upstairs helping our models get ready, thanks ladies for your help. Nick Giampietro, your sound system was wonderful; it made us all sound like professionals.

Rita Louden and Alice Rogers, our own personal caterers, did an outstanding job. They arrived at 4 and didn't finish working until 10:30. Now that's dedication. The delicious cheese platters were works of art.  Desserts were memorable and quickly gobbled up by the sellout crowd.  Thanks go to Deliciously Different and Donna Woyevodsky for selling us the cakes at cost. Those ladies can bake!

Sandy Matamala did a super job as coordinator of raffle prizes.  We had some gorgeous baskets, valuable gift certificates, and other great donations which raised an awesome amount of money for the Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence.  Final figures are not yet in but the exact amount will be given in the next newsletter.

Claire Merz, our own talented artist and table decorator, created some beautiful creative centerpieces .She even decorated the back of the piano. I heard through the grapevine she personally can give you a guided tour through every Dollar Store in the area. Super job Claire.

Yvonne Albanese created a beautiful poster for the show, such talent.

Tom Devine, the commodore, was there snapping pictures of the models and tables.  We can hardly wait to see the results.

And last of all, many thanks to the members and guests who were so supportive of this new venture.  Sue Greco did it all, modeled, sold chances, donated a beautiful gift to the auction, and helped clean up.  You were a great audience and helped make the fashion show the success it was. It just goes to prove that women really know how to have a good time and raise money for a valuable cause at the same time.

Hope you all continue to donate to this charity and bring items on their wish list to the Yacht Club.  We'll make sure it gets to the shelter as quickly as possible.

Talent Show- organized by Bernadette Weldon

More details to follow in the next newsletter. On Monday July 30th the children of the BYC put on a show on the front porch. A good time was had by all.

Please NOTE: Some members have expressed an interest in improving the playground area. The Board of Directors would like to hear some thoughts and proposals. This can be the start of planning for next year. Any major project takes time from conception, to planning, to ordering, to completion. It is never too early to start!

There will be a meeting of interested parents on Monday August 11th @ 7 PM in the Club.

Regatta - Jack Albanese and Pete Capitan

There is a correction from the first Corinthian race; Jerome Dunnells was second and Jeff Beiselen was third.

Governor’s Cup:

On July 20th the Babylon Yacht Club Governors Cup had an excellent showing of club boats and some new members getting involved. In first place was Gerry Dunnells on “Chanson”, Second Place went to Greg Schneller on “Mirage”, and third place went to a Jack Morgan who is a new member on “Ceol Na Mara”. It nice to see some new faces out there!!

Many thanks to Patty and Bob Brink for helping run the race and for the excellent digital pictures Patty took during the start. After starting the race Patty ran home and downloaded the pictures, printed them out and displayed them at the awards ceremony immediately following the race. It added a nice touch to the whole event.

Upcoming events:

August 8th: Corinthian Race #2    7:00 PM Start

August 23: Commodore Cup        1:00 PM Start

Reminder:  House Rules of the Club (see Page 38 and 39 of the Yearbook)

All house rules, guest rules and pool regulations are of utmost importance for the comfort of you the membership.  As the season is getting into full gear please familiarize yourself with them.

As a reminder there will be No Smoking within the Clubhouse and the South porch on the 1st floor.  Additionally, adult supervision is required for all children on our docks and in the playground.

Life jackets are recommended for children on docks, especially if a parent is not there. One slip or an accidental push with a crab net can lead to a terrible accident. None of the kids like to be confined but please use common sense with your children on the dock.

The floating dock is not to be a launching pad for jet skis. Please use the area around the hoist, where the club boats are to change riders. It is dangerous to be jumping off the T- Dock into the bay with all the boat traffic around

There is to be no one with wet bathing suits going through the main clubhouse, a wet floor can be very dangerous. Use the locker area bathhouse facilities for changing bathing suits etc.

Please take note:

On Sunday, July 20th sometime before 8:45 pm a bicycle was taken from the bike rack outside of the snack area.  It was a boy's bicycle-Nirve02-“Hypnotic” black with white lettering.  If you have any information or know the whereabouts pertaining to this bicycle please call Wendy Schou @ 661-2396.
Also, for your protection, please remind your children to lock up their bicycles.

NOTE from the Commodore:

The BYC has moved the Bike rack around over the last few years to make it safer and less susceptible to theft. On busy weekends there are many people coming in or out of the parking lot. It is hard to know all the members and their children. It is sad to see anyone loose a treasured possession. Please lock you cars and your bikes. It is a sad commentary on the times we live in.

BYC Special Events-

Special thanks to Paul Steinberg. The whole program will be put on the Web site in the near future. The following describes the events on August 24th.

Snapper Derby

Preparation involve purchasing bait, extra hooks, some bamboo rods, and purchasing prizes IE; fishing rods, snapper poles, Crab nets(very popular), crab traps, misc :fishing oriented items.

Adults must be placed strategically around the docks to assure safety; no casting, leaving rods with hooks on the docks. Judges will measure and identify each fish caught and encourage returning fish to the water. Each fish will be announced via the moderator from a reviewing stand. Categories: by age, boys, and girls. Prizes awarded for biggest fish (length) most fish, fish returned, most unusual catch etc.

HUCK FINN/ Field Day

Field activities begin later in the morning or early afternoon and are set up for all ages. Participants are divided evenly for each team by coaches. Events are described and team names selected. Winning teams are presented with ribbons for ice cream. More ribbons for the number one team etc.

The Huck Finn Day continues and features a Huck Finn look-a-like Contest where the youngsters dress up to look like Huck Finn, gather on the steps of the front porch and receive the warm applause from all. Once again everyone wins according to the judges.

The Huck Finn raft contest is for all BYC families and can combine the efforts of more than one family. Rafts are created in various forms, each with their team name. Generally they are hidden until the last moment. To be powered by sail, “manpower” etc. No power motors.  Boats are tied up along the T Dock, judges are preselected, and a safety boat manned by adults is in the basin near a preset race marker all within the basin. Contestants MUST wear life jackets or be disqualified! Safety FIRST. This is a “race”; rafts must move around the marker and touch back on the dock where the race began. NO FREE SWIMMING in the basin. Prizes are awarded for first place overall with ribbons for ice cream.
