ENTERTAINMENT – submitted by John Bell and Paul Greco

Apparently BYC was the place to be on July 5th! The annual 4th of July Party was well attended. We had fantastic weather that spanned the entire weekend. Dennis Faherty, Mark Murphy and Bud Caputo cooked 243 hamburgers and 81 pieces of chicken. Connor Uriarte ran burgers to our assemblers Kieran McShane and Brian Nowotarski. Tom Crimi transformed 200 pieces of corn into a delicacy. Joan Uriarte, Joan Haedrich and Sue Greco prepared and served all the condiments along with 50 lbs of potato/macaroni salads. Lou Colascione helped prepare and serve 160 hotdogs. Jerry Ryan served all the hungry people with a smile. To take everyone’s money were Brian Maher and Mary Nowotarski with help from Michelle Uriarte, Mariana Albanese, Emily Gleason and Anne Greco. Also thanks to Mike and Dennis Barrett and staff  for their help. To everyone involved, Thank You!

Happy Hour JULY 9

Another wonderful happy hour! There were over 160 people in attendance! This seems to be the new standard. The steak and turkey carving station complete with horseradish mayo, coconut shrimp, “Heart Attack on a Stick”, egg rolls and many other delicacies filled our member’s stomachs. Our hosts Barbara and Jim English along with Cathy & Gary Sieb, Susan & Tim Finnegan, Trisha & Rick German, Mary Ellen & John Cuiffo, Kerry & Jaime Allen, Linda & Irwin Sindeband and Taryn & John Birkmire did an absolutely astounding job! Thank you all.

Women’s Committee- submitted by Irene Morriss

Our first luncheon, which was held on June 24th, was a scorcher but a good

time was had by all.  Sue Howell and her capable committee; Mary Grover, Joan

St. John, Fran Pasch, Marion Rafter, and Sally Shiebler served a delicious lunch;

turkey salad, asparagus aspic, croissants and macaroons.  You are stars,

ladies! Great job under trying circumstances.

The auction was fun and profitable too.  Many "treasures" were adopted by new

families.  I heard through the grapevine that some husbands weren't too thrilled with the items purchased but hey, they were a bargain.

Sandy Matamala and her dynamic committee; Carol McTigue, Janet Hogan, Janet

Florin, Deirdre Mountcastle, Inez Poppe, Jackie Miller prepared a tasty lunch - chicken salad, fruit, date nut bread, blueberries, orange sherbet and cookies, which was enjoyed by all.  Heard lots of praise for a job well done on a hot and humid day. Thanks ladies.

Our next luncheon will be held July 22nd.  If you haven't made your

reservations yet, please call Grace Ricketts at 669-9106 or Pat Mack at

587-7164.

The luncheon scheduled for August 5th does not have a hostess yet.  How about

it new members, (or old members), why not try a luncheon (with my help)?

It's fun and not too demanding. Call Irene Morris at 661-5133.

Something new is coming ti the BYC this summer, A FASHION SHOW! The date is July 29th from 7-9.  The cost is $15 and proceeds will go to The Suffolk County

Coalition Against Domestic Violence which is based in Bay Shore. Refreshments

consisting of cheese and crackers, desserts and coffee will be served. BYOB if you'd like, we'll supply the ice and glasses.  Rita Louden and Alice Rogers are chairing this committee.  Raffles will be coordinated by Sandy Matamala.  Call her at 587-9451 and offer to help her with donations or putting some baskets together. Fashions are being coordinated by Maggie Shaw and include, Talbots, Exqus, Puddle Duck, Ann Taylor Loft and Bunger.  Our very own Victoria McMillan will feature some of her own bridal designs.  Reserve your ticket/table early by calling Suzie Heilpern at 422-7367.  Checks can be made out to the BYC and dropped off or sent to Suzie at 28 Sequams La.E. W. Islip 11795. Hope to see lots of you there.

Regatta - Jack Albanese and Pete Capitan

July 4th Regatta:

Our 77th annual 4th of July Regatta was a huge success with 20 knot winds Saturday and around 15 knots Sunday made for excellent conditions for some great racing. With over 80 boats competing and over 150 sailors battling for their place of glory. All racing results can be viewed and printed out from the BYC Web site visit www.babylonyachtclub.org under the Regatta Section. Some excellent digital pictures of the fleet can also be seen under the Photo Album section. More pictures will be added as they become available.

Without the support of our membership an event like this would not be possible and I would like to recognize the following people who gave their time to make this a success.

Committee Boats: Pete Mercier, Bob Brink, Eileen Eppig, Danny O’Donnell, John Bergquist

Patrol Boats: Kenny and Colin Matthes (2 saves and a babe), Rick German, John Cuiffo, Tom Devine, Kevin O’Brien, Ray Uriarte, Ron Lasley, Tom Rund, Brian Cumerford, Jack Morgan, Dave Haedrich, Tim Bell and Jonathan, Gerry Ryan, Rich Cappetta, Dave Hyer, Charlie Smith and a special thank you to Charlie’s grandson who jumped into the churning waters to right a sunfish for a competitor in trouble. The sailor was fished out of the water by Brian Cumerford and their boat was towed back to the BYC. We had the right guy on the job. Brian drives a Nassau Country Police boat for a living!

Division One Committee PHRF: Ken Goodwin (Nith), John Gleason, Warren Light, Pete Mercier, and Jackie Devine.

Division 2 Committee JY/Laser/420: Bob and Michelle Grover, Joe and Christine Mulle.

Division 3 Committee Sunfish/Mercury: Pete and Sandralee Capitain, Jack Morgan and Kathleen Farrell.

Division 4 Opti: Bob and Patty Brink, Bob and Judy Cooper.

Up coming Races:

July 11th Corinthian Race # 1

July 20th Governors Cup

August 8th Corinthian Race # 2

August 23rd Commodore Cup

Please watch the Web site for all race schedules and changes!

Friday evening, July 11 the BYC had the first Corinthian Race. This race is to encourage sailors to race who don’t normally participate in competitive events. The format is more social than cutthroat. There was a rewards ceremony afterwards in the Commodore’s room where all our potential America’s Cup skippers discussed their tactics!

1st    Ken Goodwin            Intreped    (maiden Voyage)

2nd   Jeff Beiselin             Zepher

3rd    Gerry Dunnells             Chanson

As a sideline we are pleased to report that the Kelt that was advertised in the last newsletter was purchased by a club members, Ed & Cynthia Lanigan. This boat was owned by long time member Dr. Hangarter. His wife, Judy, is thrilled that it is staying in the club. There are several boats in the club that have moved onto new members in the BYC. It is always nice to see the enjoyment of sailing being passed onto new genrations

Reminder:  House Rules of the Club (see Page 38 and 39 of the Yearbook)

All house rules, guest rules and pool regulations are of utmost importance for the comfort of you the membership.  As the season is getting into full gear please familiarize yourself with them.

As a reminder there will be No Smoking within the Clubhouse and the South porch on the 1st floor.  Additionally, adult supervision is required for all children on our docks and in the playground.  Life jackets are recommended for children on docks

There is to be no one with wet bathing suits going through the main clubhouse, a wet floor can be very dangerous. Use the locker area bathhouse facilities for changing bathing suits etc.

Note from the Commodore:

A few housekeeping items:

The phone in the manager’s office is to be used for business purposes only. Once in a while an emergency call is OK. We are finding that many members and their children are using the phone. Parents, please give your children money to use the pay phone to call you after lessons.

Please wash your dishes after using them. It is not the staff’s job to clean up dirty dishes. They have a hard enough time keeping the club clean with several hundred families using the facilities.

Lastly, it is the responsibility of the party hosts and members to wash and return any used table cloths. The BYC does not have a laundry or dry cleaning service that does this.

Admissions:

Resigned in good standing:

Dominick & Toni Bandolato

Condolences:

It is with regret that we report on the passing of Gerry LeSauvage: She was a 50+ year member of the BYC. Our sympathy to her family and friends, she will be missed
