The Loudon & Rogers Opener 5/24/03
The rain came
down and the chicken and beef shish kabob went down as the band played on. Hostesses Rita Loudon, Alice Rogers,
Jennifer Rogers, and their committee decorated with a red, white, and blue
color scheme appropriate for the Memorial Day weekend. Almost two hundred members mingled over
irresistible appetizers and caught up with the latest news after a long
winter’s absence from the club. In
between dances, BYC members feasted on succulent shish kebabs, fresh string
beans garnished with red onion, rice with peas and scallions, Caesar salad, and
rolls. A delectable dessert of pound
cake topped with strawberries and whipped cream ended this most festive opening
day party. Many thanks goes to the
above mentioned hostesses and their husbands ably assisted by their committee
of Jim and Julia Rogers, George and Sharon Donnelly, Ray and Maureen Wardell,
Ray and Kim Mascolo, Joe and Alice Vanderveldt, Ray and Clair Merz, Kate Albro,
Jackie Janaszak, and Barbara O’Malley.
Beefsteak Party 6/7/03
The wet
monsoons of India have found a new home here on Long Island. The entertainment season at the BYC is
carrying on and will not be deterred by those outside forces. Weather has never been an issue, and the
2003 season continued with the first beefsteak party. Ping Caputo and Pong Corbett grilled meat in the ping-pong
room. Following a request from Ping
Caputo, John Montgomery acquired London broil and chemically treated it with
marinade. Agents from Zagat’s and the
Michelin guide wandered in, asking who was in charge of the party and wanting
to interview and photograph those responsible for the cuisine and
ambiance. The expert opinion was that
the party was a four hat affair. The
Michelin notables being interviewed were, Joan and Ray Uriarte, Dennis and
Barbara Faherty, Liz and Ron English, Richard and Janice Cappetta, Wendy and
Jeff Schou, Kathy and Ken Klemens, Lisa and Paul Mulford, Regina and Rick
Jacoby and Jim Miraval.
Happy Hour 6/11/03
Shirley and
her gang led off the Happy Hour Season once again. It is possible some of our
recently departed members were watching over us as the clouds broke and it was
a beautiful evening, calm and pleasant. The “veteran” crew didn’t miss a beat
as the hors d’oeuvres kept coming. Shirley swears this is her last one, but we
have heard that before! It is a great tradition and veteran members don’t want
the streak to be broken.
Thanks to her
crew: Marilyn Winter, Lawrence & Barbara Schaefer, Ramon & Carlin DeMurias,
Molly Blue, Doug & Kathie Smith, Kay Baker, Katherine Fallon and Bud &
Joan St. John.

Note from the manager

Please watch the bulletin boards for hours after school closes.
Pool
Searching for
an unexpected leak in the pool prevented its use on opening day. For a number of days the location of the
leak remained a mystery while deck boards were removed for inspection and leak
detection. Prior to the full exposure
of the plumbing system, our pool companies offered possible cause, all of which
would have caused great expense. Now
there is a big fork in the road: spend large sums or rely on our own
abilities. Dennis Barrett recently
received his Suffolk County Certified Pool Operator’s license after passing a
tough exam on pool trouble shooting problems.
Dennis, who is friendly with the pool managers at Jones Beach, invited
them to look at the problem with him.
The three fellows crawled under the deck and found an old unconnected,
partially plugged supply pipe leaking into the sand below. The Board of Governors is indebted and
grateful for Dennis’s resourcefulness to network with knowledgeable peers and
solve the problem at no expense.
Gardening
Committee
Special thanks to Patty Brink, SandraLee
Capitain, Judy Cooper, Jill Hoyler and Linda Devine. They gave up their
Saturday morning before opening day to plant the final plants and pull the last
few weeds. Mother nature has kept the
plants well watered as we all well know!
Women’s
Committee
Hope everyone is getting ready for our first luncheon, June 24th. Please remember to bring a few good items for our annual auction. Even if you're not planning to attend, feel free to donate to the auction. Marion Rafter's phone number has changed and is now 969-7959. Please call as soon as possible for reservations
Note from the commodore:
Many Yachts clubs have
rocking chairs on their porches for members to watch the scenery on a beautiful
summer day. Two years ago a few “traditional” members asked if the club could
purchase a few so they could enjoy the club in a relaxing manner. This year one
of those traditionalists passed away, Anita Baxter. A few of her friends got
together to purchase another rocker in her name. A brass remembrance plaque
will be attached shortly. As you sit in these chairs, talking with friends or
family, think of all those people who have been here before you enjoying the
same view and serenity that the BYC offers.
Reminder: House Rules of the Club (see Page 38 and 39 of the Yearbook)
All house rules, guest rules and pool
regulations are of utmost importance for the comfort of you the
membership. As the season is getting
into full gear please familiarize yourself with them.
As a reminder there will be No Smoking
within the Clubhouse and the South porch on the 1st floor. Additionally, adult supervision is required
for all children on our docks and in the playground. Life jackets are recommended for children on docks
