SPRING PARTY AT CAPTAIN BILL’S
March 23, 2003
Begin the one-hundredth year of the BYC’s existence by making your
reservations for the opening Spring Party. Captain Bill’s (end of Ocean Avenue
in Bay Shore) will provide plenty of good food along with an open bar from 4
p.m. to 7p.m. for just $30 per person. This party is for members only but
sponsors can bring prospective candidates for membership. Gentlemen are
requested to wear jackets and ties.
Anyone suffering from winter’s CABIN FEVER would be advised to take
advantage of this opportunity to celebrate spring.
To make a
reservation, please call John and Margaret Bell at 661-4703 or Paul and Suzanne
Greco at 669-5696
YEARBOOK COMMITTEE
If you have any
changes for the yearbook, i.e. names or address corrections, boat additions and
deletions, etc, please call or email Jill Corbett at 587-1450. Corbatrask@aol.com The yearbook committee is also looking for photos for this year’s book. If you have photos that you would like the
committee to consider, please call Bud Caputo
at 587-1601 ((bud277@optonline.net)
or Tom Devine at 661-6273 (tdevine265@hotmail.com) and they will
arrange to pick them up. ALL PHOTOS
WILL BE RETURNED UPON REQUEST.
ONE HUNDRED YEAR ANNIVERSITY
We would like to create
one or more display cases in the BYC this summer. Members will be able to look
back over the years in pictures or mementoes,
get a sense of what the club was all about, and see how it has evolved into the fine organization it has become . I would
ask that any family, especially the “old timers”, scour
their attics and storage bins. We would like to borrow these items for the 2003
season to put in a display case that will be locked.
All items in the case will be acknowledged and returned at the end of the
season. So start searching and call Tom
Devine with anything you think might be of interest.
CLUB
ARCHIVES
In
a club so rich in history, there are surely many of you who have pre 1970's
pictures of the BYC. We would ask you to share with us any pictures of
historical significance that would become part of BYC's permanent archives. The
pictures will be digitized and returned to you unharmed, along with our
appreciation. Some of them may be featured on our new website. Please contact
me, Pete Capitain, at 661-1783 or email pete@phcsystems.com.
ADMISSIONS – submitted by Ken
Goodwin
Now
is the time to get the applications to us for the people you are sponsoring for
membership so we can start the interviewing process. If you need applications, please call Ken
Goodwin at 422--4408. As a reminder, in
order to sponsor or second a prospective member, you must be a member of the
Club for at least two years.
The
BYC has a waiting list and all applications will be numbered. The earlier the
process is started, the better the chances are
for prospective applicants.
NEWSLETTER Any questions,
comments, additions, or classifieds, please
contact Tom Devine at 661-6273 or email tdevine265@hotmail.com.
THANK
YOU- Tom Devine & Greg

Old man winter hit the local area with a sudden fury. In
December the basin in the dock area was already frozen in. Ice can play havoc with the poles that are
used to dock the boats. The movements of the tides and ice can lift these poles
right out of the bay bottom. For the second year in a row Gerry Ryan came
through for the club. Gerry likes to leave his boat in till the last possible moment.
We took advantage and commandeered his boat to put in the ice eaters that hang
off the poles. The ice eaters bring warm water up from the bay bottom and
prevent surface ice from forming around the poles. Tim Finnegan also helped on
that frigid morning.
The cold snap in January also presented a problem. Seven
ice eaters were not enough to keep the basin clear. The house committee had to get two more. One Saturday morning
when it was about 15 degree a few members were brave enough to venture down to the
BYC. We established that the ice was at least six inches thick in some areas.
Jack Albanese was the volunteer to walk on the ice and chop holes to install
the two additional ice eaters. John Bell brought down a few of his trusty tools
to break through the ice. I think he really wants to be the TOOL MAN when he
grows up!
TREASURER’S REPORT: Invoices
for all dues and fees will go out by March 15.
Since we have a substantial debt as a result of the capital improvements
that were made last year, your timely payment will enable us to satisfy this
liability sooner and save money on interest payments. The by-laws are on your side until opening day, but I would
appreciate any efforts that members can make to pay their dues as soon as
possible.
