Saturday, May 24th -
marks the official opening of the Babylon Yacht Club Season. Members are welcome to come to the club with
or without boats. Smaller boats -
please use appropriate slips so that the larger beamed boats have room to
dock. Sailboats usually prefer the “T”
dock for easier boarding access. The
stewards or our members will give you a hand with your lines if you need help.
12:30 p.m. the
Board of Governors dressed in blue blazers white slacks or skirts, etc. will
gather on the east side of the porch clubhouse. The BYC’s Past Commodores will be attired in blue blazers and red
slacks. The Junior Board of Governors,
the Women’s Committee and the Club Manager and staff will also be present. At
approximately 12:50, gather in the deck area around the Club porch for the
Commissioning ceremony.
1:00 p.m. The cannon will be fired and our season
officially begins. The Club burgee
will be raised at the main flagpole, the reviewing stand and on all yacht club
vessels. The Commodore, Tom Devine,
will introduce those present.
Immediately following this
ceremony, we go to the Junior Yacht Club to the west of the pool for their
Commissioning ceremony and introduction of the Junior Yacht Club Board.
Following JYC Commissioning there
will be a Champagne toast to the Past Commodores given by the Board of
Governors, on the front porch.
2:00 approx. Food - Hot Dogs, soda, provided by the club at
no charge are available for all after the ceremony. Setups and beer will also
be available (adults only).
3:30-4:00 p.m.
Tentative – No word from them yet! A Salute to Long Island Yacht Club.
LIYC members hop on their many yachts and pass in review off the “T” dock as we
fire our cannon in salute. This is a
lot of fun and our LIYC neighbours are none too quiet about it, usually passing
with horns and balloons.
6:00 p.m. - New members only!! You are invited to
the Commodores Room upstairs in the main clubhouse for a private cocktail party
to meet the Board of Governors.
Afterwards you will be guests (NO CHARGE!) of the Board at the Opening
Party. Dress for the party is jackets and ties for the men, dresses, skirts or
pants outfits for the ladies. (Please
note: You must make reservations in advance to attend the opening party. Please advise the party hosts that you are
new members. See Entertainment)
Dress for the day for our members is yacht club “casual”,
men – shirts, slacks or shorts, women - blouses, shirts, shorts, slacks,
skirts. It is suggested that you wear
boat shoes if you plan to boat hop. It prevents the scratching of the boat
finish and helps to keep you from slipping into the bay.
Sunday, May 25th - Sunday is a day to spend as
you please, enjoying the all the beautiful renovations to the Club. Come down for the day, bring a picnic lunch
or dinner and enjoy. The snack bar will be open.
Monday, May 26th – The South Bay Cruising Club
will be our guest for their opening festivities. The Club will still be open to
our members. Many members of the BYC are also members of the SBCC. It is nice to see the boat basin filled with
sailboats and their festive flags.

Reminder: times and schedules are posted on the Web Site. It’s never to early to start planning
Please make reservations early to the opening party! It is fair and courteous to the hosts.

Membership:
The following members have resigned in good standing:
Jay Graham
James & Linda Dean
Larry & Jean Schiebler
James & Darlene Schultheis
The Board has reviewed the membership with regard to the utilization of the facilities. Membership is still under the limits authorized by the Constitution of the BYC, but the Board felt that the constraints on the parking and physical plant were getting close to what was fair to the existing membership. The number of new members has therefore been capped for this year. If we get a number of resignations before or shortly after opening day the Board will review applications on file.
On Memorial Day we should remember all those past members who helped make the BYC the club we all enjoy today. It is with sadness that the Board reports the recent passing of two members, Anita Baxter and Mrs Oliver (Janet) Howell. Anita was a fixture for close to forty years and always was a great help at the regattas. Mrs Howell was a close friend of many members. I’m sure they are looking after the BYC from the
pearly gates.
Gardening Committee:
Many thanks to the following people who gave up their Saturday morning to weed the beds and plant flowers so that the club will look good for opening day: Sandralee Capitain, Linda Devine, Suzanne Greco, Renee Mattera, Marian Metznik, Amy Moore, Jane Muchmore, Meddi Shaw, and Nancy Warren. Special thanks to Alyssa and Rick Van Bourgondien for providing and delivering all the flowers. The new evergreens at the entrance were planted by Jerry Dunnells, John Bell and Bob Madocks. “Thank you gentlemen.”
Now if we could just get the flowers to grow as well as the weeds do we’ll be all set. If everyone pitches in we can keep the gardens looking good all season. Don’t hesitate to stop and pull a few weeds if you should see any.
Thanks again to all those who pitched in.
Women’s Committee - submitted by Irene Morriss
It's that time of year again, spring is
here and the BYC is preparing for another wonderful season of card
parties. We need your help so if you'd
like to volunteer to hostess a luncheon or help someone who needs some extra
hands, please call Irene Morris at 661-5133 as soon as possible.
Our first luncheon is scheduled for
TUES., JUNE 24th at 12 o'clock. Please
call Marion Rafter at 669-4502 for reservations. Sue Howell and her dynamic committee are preparing a wonderful
lunch for all to enjoy. Hope to see a sellout crowd at our first luncheon.
Our first luncheon will once again be an
auction luncheon so if everyone in the club could donate just one significant
item, we could have a very successful affair and raise some money for the Yacht
Club. It would be nice to vary the
auction this year and make it a Chinese auction as well as a bidding one. You don't have to be a card player to
attend, join us for lunch and the auction.

BYC Web site:
A member can now send E Mail to the flag officers, Treasurer or Secretary. The various committee heads can be contacted the same way. The schedule for 2003 is posted on the site as is the last newsletter. We hope to be able to publish current comments and post pictures from recent parties or events on another page when the season starts. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
Notes from the Commodore:
When you come down to the Club you will be impressed by the improvements made during the off season. This is part of the capital improvement project this board has carried on from a blueprint made several years ago. The increase in dues and fees are for a purpose. The Directors during the last few years have been committed to improving the physical plant of the BYC so that present and future members can enjoy the club for many years to come. It is not cheap to run a facility like we are blessed to have. It would be next to impossible to duplicate the BYC anywhere close for a fraction of the cost. Please remember that when you use the club and please treat it like it was your home.
The Kitchen has a new fire retardant system over the stove. The BBQ’s have been moved away from the clubhouse and the Board purchased. three new grills. The clubhouse has been re-sided for its One-Hundredth year. The sailing program will benefit from a floating dock to speed the lesson along.
There are still a few house keeping items to be done over the next several weeks so please be patient.
Last but not least is a widening of the parking lot exit. Last year there was an incident where an ambulance came into the parking lot to attend to a hurt boater. The ambulance could not get out of the parking lot because of the number of cars parked near the exit. The Board decided to take a slice of the grass for parking to improve the flow in the direction of the exit. There will be lines drawn in the parking lot to indicate where a car should not block. The staff will be instructed to notify a Board member or club manager if any car is blocking the free flow of traffic in the lot. The owner of the car will be asked to move it.
There are many older members and children who utilize the facilities on a daily basis. The laws of probability dictate that someone will suffer an accident or medical emergency while on the premises. WE (the MEMBERS) need to be able to get an emergency vehicle into and out of the parking lot as swiftly as possible. It is very easy to park in a spot where you have to lug coolers or escort young children to swim or sail lessons. Please do that as quickly as possible and move your car to a location where it is not blocking traffic. The staff will be instructed to keep the space directly in front of the clubhouse clear for loading and unloading.
Thank you in advance for your cooperation
