Saturday, May 29th - marks the official opening of the Babylon Yacht Club Season. Members are welcome to come to the club with or without boats. Smaller boats - please use appropriate slips so that the larger beamed boats have room to dock. Sailboats usually prefer the “T” dock for easier boarding access. The stewards or our members will give you a hand with your lines if you need help.
12:30 p.m. the Board of Governors dressed in blue blazers white slacks or skirts, etc. will gather on the east side of the clubhouse porch. The BYC’s Past Commodores will be attired in blue blazers and red slacks. The Junior Board of Governors, the Women’s Committee and the Club Manager and staff will also be present. At approximately 12:50, gather in the deck area around the Club porch for the Commissioning ceremony.
1:00 p.m. The cannon will be fired and our season officially begins. The Club burgee will be raised at the main flagpole, the reviewing stand and on all yacht club vessels. The Commodore, Tom Devine, will introduce those present.
Immediately following this ceremony, we go to the Junior Yacht Club to the west of the pool for their Commissioning ceremony and introduction of the Junior Yacht Club Board.
Following JYC Commissioning there will be a Champagne toast to the Past Commodores given by the Board of Governors, on the front porch.
2:00 approx. Food - Hot Dogs, soda, provided by the club at no charge are available for all after the ceremony. Setups and beer will also be available (adults only).
6:00 p.m. - New members only!! You are invited to the Commodores Room upstairs in the main clubhouse for a private cocktail party to meet the Board of Governors. Afterwards you will be guests (NO CHARGE!) of the Board at the Opening Party. Dress for the party is jackets and ties for the men, dresses, skirts or pants outfits for the ladies. (Please note: You must make reservations in advance to attend the opening party. Please advise the party hosts that you are new members. See Entertainment)
Dress for the day for our members is yacht club “casual”, men – shirts, slacks or shorts, women - blouses, shirts, shorts, slacks, skirts. It is suggested that you wear boat shoes if you plan to boat hop. It prevents the scratching of the boat finish and helps to keep you from slipping into the bay.
Sunday, May 26th - Sunday is a day to spend as you please, enjoying the all the beautiful renovations to the Club. Come down for the day, bring a picnic lunch or dinner and enjoy. The snack bar will be open.
Monday, May 31st – The South Bay Cruising Club will be our guest for their opening festivities. The Club will still be open to our members. Many members of the BYC are also members of the SBCC. It is nice to see the boat basin filled with sailboats and their festive flags.

Boat Yard by Pete Capitain
John Gleason and John Hetterich... who can say more.
The Boat yard has been dramatically and permanently transformed thanks to the stylistic impressionism of John G. and John H. Their masterpiece, “The culmination of one hundred years of Yacht Club life on the Gin Pole - in subtle shades of … Black”, is a tribute to the volunteerism which forms the bedrock of our club. Please visit it and commend them on their originality and style.
We are now interviewing potential masters for their visions of the next hundred years. The masterpiece will be entitled, “The Hoist – in Shades of... White”. The requirements for the piece are that it includes stunning visuals and eclectic design. Anyone may apply.

BYC Web site:
A member can now send E Mail to the flag officers, Treasurer or Secretary. The various committee heads can be contacted the same way. The schedule for 2004 is posted on the site as is the last newsletter. We hope to be able to publish current comments and post pictures from recent parties or events on another page when the season starts. Any comments or suggestions would be appreciated.
Notes from the Commodore:
The Directors during the last few years have been committed to improving the physical plant of the BYC so that present and future members can enjoy the club for many years to come. It is not cheap to run a facility like we are blessed to have. It would be next to impossible to duplicate the BYC anywhere close for a fraction of the cost. Please remember that when you use the club and please treat it like it was your home.
Congratulations: Our assistant manager, Dennis Barrett and his wife, Ellen welcomed a new baby boy on April 30th. His name is Brendan Thomas Barrett.
Please put the date of Wednesday June 16 on your calendar. It is the spring membership meeting. The meeting will be open to all voting and non voting members and provide a forum for open discussion of any topic of Club affairs and operations.
From our manager
Please notify our manager if you intend to bring a boat into the boat yard. Leave an E Mail at the bycmanager address, knock on his door, leave him a note etc. We need an accurate count. There is a list for a space in the yard. Early in the season we try to be accommodating in helping with rigging and preparing boats for the season. The yard has to be organized or CHAOS reigns!
The Board of Directors has asked that no Jet Ski or PWS be stored on an overnight or seasonal basis in the boatyard on a trailer. There is no objection to the use of the ramp to launch.
