Babylon Yacht Club News           November 7, 2004

Entertainment, submitted by Paul Greco and Greg Schneller

October 20th Happy Hour hosted by Greg & Cathy Aitken, Bud & Linda Caputo, Margie Hudson, Bob & Eileen Madocks, Jim & Ann Tuffin, Rick & Alyssa VanBourgondien was a great success. There was an abundance of delicious food as always. Menu was Crab cakes, Corn/clam chowder, potato soup, assorted cheeses and meats, panini sandwiches, shrimp, stuffed mushrooms, mussels, and too many dips to mention.

This was a wonderful way to end the 2004 season. Thank You!

Appreciation Party           Sunday October 17th

The invitation party is the Board of Directors way of saying “THANK YOU” to all those members who helped make 2004 an enjoyable summer. THE BYC is a club that exists on the efforts of members who donate time and skill. It has a very diverse membership in terms of age, occupation and talents. This mix is brought together in the summer for the enjoyment of all.

The best way to enjoy the club is too participate in the various activities. Time flies when you’re having a good time and this summer seemed to go very quickly.

Special awards are given towards the end of the party.

U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary Safe Boating Award.

The Board gives this award to an individual who the board feels stood out in helping us have an incident free summer during our regatta and race schedule. Our club is recognized throughout the Great South Bay Yacht Racing Association as having the best participation in safety boats during the Regatta season.

He was always there when we needed a hand during the regatta schedule as a patrol boat, mark set boat or race committee. He has been doing this for the last ten years and the Board would like to recognize him for all his effort during that time. In fact, he and his grandson rescued a sailor in distress last year. This year the award goes to Charlie Smith.

BYC Family of the Year Award

This award is in memory of Barbara Steinberg, wife of a past Commodore, Paul Steinberg. It is given to the family that best represents the spirit of involvement in the activities of the BYC. The club has many members who give of their time and talents so that the rest of us can enjoy the activities and atmosphere that makes the BYC special.

This year the award goes to a couple who have been involved in many activities over the past fifteen years. Their son has moved onto college but they still help at many functions, especially those having to do with sailing. When your children grow up the BYC still a place for the adults to enjoy..

Every year at the Fourth of July, they are one of the first couples here each day and one of the last to leave. He has also been at almost every race or regatta event we held. They have been helping the Junior sailing for many years in countless ways. She is a saint for putting up with him because I think anything to do with sailing at the club comes before “Honey Do” chores at home.  This year the award goes to Dave & Joann Hyer

BYC Annual Striped Bass Tournament      Barry Corbett and Rod Bison

A record number of 18 boats and 48 anglers signed up for the annual BYC Inshore/Offshore fishing tournament held on Saturday, October 30, the weather was a little nasty but fishable and we all worked hard but the fish did not cooperate.  Hot Dogs, Cold Beer and Hot Coffee were ready for us when we got in thanks to Kathleen Bison.

The results

1st place fish----Mat Brink
2nd place fish---Mike Grgich

The perpetual Captains Trophy goes to Mike Grgich and the Harvest Moon crew

Sunday October 10-                 BYC Corinthian Four

A light, five knot North breeze kicked into overdrive at the start to give us 10-15 knots from the Northwest.  Dave Hyer set out marks for a starboard triangle and Joe Mulle set a square starting line from which we sailed a triangle twice around to finish at the Yacht Club.

Eight skippers, including an interloper from the Cruising Club, Harry Manko on Full Circle, participated in some fast paced and exciting action on the water.  This was one of those times when you didn’t know the outcome until the numbers came in.

Burgers and Franks by Sandralee were again welcomed by the hungry crew, who took full advantage of the late afternoon sun on the main deck.  It was a nice way to end the regatta season.

The results of Corinthian Four are-
1st Place            Intrepid                  Ken Goodwin
2nd Place           Ceol na Mara         Jack Morgan
3rd Place           Chillin                     Jeff Bieselin

JUNIOR SAILING PLAQUES – need your help

Jerry Dunnells has offered to refurbish our “Seamanship” and Sailing Master” award plaques that used to hang in the clubhouse.  Engraving the names of recipients stopped in 1992.  If you were the recipient of either of these awards, after that date, or know the name of a recipient, please let us know who and what year so that we can update the information.  Call Sandralee at 661-1783 or email me at Sandralee@phcsystems.com.

Club is now closed.

All boats must be removed from the Boat Yard. Owners of boats will be getting phone calls during the next few weeks to remove their boats. The water will stay on in the boatyard till Thanksgiving but is being shut off with in the next week at the docks.
