Entertainment, submitted by Paul Greco and Greg Schneller

As usual, the Caribbean Party was a huge success. Your terrific hosts were, Nick & Donna Woyevodsky, Kevin & Chris Fitzpatrick, Ray & Kim Mascolo, Scott & Bernadette Broderick, Tom & Linda Hoyler, Tim & Karen Kennedy, Dan & Jodi O’Donnell, Tony & Eileen Abbott, Joanne McCallan, Gail Reynolds, Mary Nowotarski and Nancy Warren.  The main course for dinner included both salmon and chicken and we are all familiar with Donna’s wonderful homemade desserts.  My favorite was the Key Lime Pie!  The steel band was so good that we had to have them play for an additional hour just to clear the dance floor.

The August 4 Happy Hour was attended by more than 150 members and was hosted by Sean & Kathy O’Malley, Mike & Maria Caputo, Ralph & Lisa Benzakein, Rich & Diane Caputi, Frank & Denise Fiorino, John & Michelle Hetterich and Steve & Emily Gargano.

With Sean & Kathy running the party you know there was plenty of great food.  Have you ever seen Kathy at the club when she did not have enough food (and offer) to feed anyone and everyone?  I know she keeps the stewards well fed.

124 members enjoyed the August 18 Happy Hour hosted by, Michael & Anne Glynn, Will & Lori Walters, Chris & Barbara Krucher, Dan & Victoria McMillan and Dave & Joan Haedrich

Regatta - Pete Capitain and Doug Williamson

Commodore’s Cup

You would think that a Hurricane blasting Florida with 172 mph winds would have some oomph left for us, but NO.  Our winds were as close to zero as you could get without actually being zero (a mathematician would call it ‘zero plus’).  The weather man confidently forecasted Southwest winds of 12 to 20,....Oh what the heck, it’s GOT to pick up eventually.

Bob and Greg Brink set up a nice course for the Northeast wind; starting at the ‘G9’, up to Willets Creek, out to a mark before the bridge, and finish.  The first two legs were sailable.  By Gerry Dunnells’ definition before the race, the light air separated the true sailors from the pack.  By the third leg, we were fortunate the current was heading towards the finish.  Enough said.

Fortunately the food was great, thanks to Debbie Goodwin, Linda Devine, and Sandralee Capitain, who put out a spread that was appreciated by all.

The results of the Commodore’s Cup are-

1st Place           Greg Schneller           on Mirage
2nd Place         Aileen Eppig   on Brokher
3rd Place          Pete Capitain  on Sugar Magnolia
Full results on the website.

JY 15 Regatta

On the other hand, we were blasted by 23-plus knot winds on Saturday, Aug. 21.  Aileen Eppig, on Annette-Too, tucked the course between our T-dock and the Babylon town pool to minimize wind action, and the fleet of four JY’s battled each other and the elements for seven races.  Michelle Grover’s scoring, and yeoman duties by Aileen’s friends Susie and Monty kept the committee boat running smoothly.

The wind, though, was slowly taking its toll on the fleet.  Team Hoyler (Jon and Jamie) blew out a sidestay, which took part of the boat with it, and Team Collins (Erin and Michael) called it quits after five races of flipping at the Gybe mark.  Team Grover (Jimmy and Justin) held on to take first place against Schneller/Schroeder (Greg and John).

All this was happening to the delight of kids at the Babylon Town Dock Snapper Derby who cheered for the boats as they passed by, or flipped and righted themselves in front of them.

Many thanks to Bob Grover, Ken and Lauren Goodwin for some tough patrol boat duty.

 Refrigerator News:

Check out the new Refrigerator Stickers.

The purpose of the stickers is twofold-

  • To keep contents, that are reserved, untouched

                                          and

  • To inform members when contents are no longer reserved and are available for use by other committees or individuals.

Many thanks to Joan Haedrich for volunteering Dave, and to Dave for his time & expertise in printing the stickers.

Women’s Committee –submitted by Irene Morris

Congratulations Libby Orr, your first luncheon as a chairperson was a smashing success! Your hard working committee ; Maggie Collis, Lucy Trumble, Shirley Skeffington, Mary Rinklin, Fran Pasch; and Dot Hall did an outstanding job under your direction.  Everyone loved the chicken salad, aspic, croissant, and the delicious brownie sundae.  You'll have to try that again next year.

Irene Morris chaired our last luncheon but due to a job commitment was unable to be there to set the luncheon up.  Her teacher poker group who pitched in and helped serve delicious quiche, spinach salad, and amaretto sundaes ably handled this job.  Luckily, there were four Yacht Club women; Jane Kane, Mary Freund, Kay Baker, and Dot Hall that set up and served.  By the time I arrived, all the hard work was completed.  Thanks ladies, you did a great job and the large luncheon crowd appreciated your efforts.

We had a very successful season of five luncheons.   Hope to see everyone back next year.
