Commissioning Weekend Schedule 2005

Saturday, May 28th - marks the official opening of the Babylon Yacht Club Season.  Members are welcome to come to the club with or without boats.  Smaller boats - please use appropriate slips so that the larger beamed boats have room to dock.  Sailboats usually prefer the “T” dock for easier boarding access.  The stewards or our members will give you a hand with your lines if you need help. Dress for the day for our members is yacht club “casual”, men - shirts, slacks or shorts, women - blouses, shirts, shorts, slacks, skirts.  It is suggested that you wear boat shoes if you plan to boat hop. It prevents the scratching of the boat finish and helps to keep you from slipping into the bay.

12:30 p.m. The Board of Governors, dressed in blue blazers, white slacks or skirts, etc. will gather on the east side of the porch clubhouse.  The BYC’s Past Commodores will be attired in blue blazers and red slacks.  The Junior Board of Governors, the Women’s Committee and the Club Manager and staff will also be present. At approximately 12:50, gather in the deck area around the Club porch for the Commissioning ceremony.

1:00 p.m. The cannon will be fired and our season officially begins.   The Club burgee will be raised at the main flagpole, the reviewing stand and on all yacht club vessels.  The Commodore, Gregory Schneller, will introduce those present. Immediately following this ceremony, we go to the Junior Yacht Club to the west of the pool for their Commissioning ceremony and introduction of the Junior Yacht Club Board.  Following JYC Commissioning there will be a Champagne toast to the Past Commodores given by the Board of Governors, on the front porch.

2:00 p.m. Food - Hot Dogs, soda, provided by the club at no charge are available for all after the ceremony. Setups and beer will also be available (adults only).

3:30-4:00 p.m.  Tentative – No word from them yet! A Salute to the Long Island Yacht Club. LIYC members hop on their many yachts and pass in review off the “T” dock as we fire our cannon in salute.  This is a lot of fun and our LIYC neighbors are none too quiet about it, usually passing with horns and balloons.

6:00 p.m. - New members only!! You are invited to the Commodores Room upstairs in the main clubhouse for a private cocktail party to meet the Board of Governors.  Afterwards you will be guests of the Board at the Opening Party. Dress for the party is jackets and ties for the men, dresses, skirts or pants outfits for the ladies. New members, please remember that you must also make reservations for the party with the Calamari’s at 587-7021.

7:00 p.m. – Main Event – BYC Opening Day Party will be from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.  The cost is $35 per person.  Please call John or Kristine Calamari for reservations (587-7021).  Remember to volunteer to be a bartender.

Sunday, May 29th - Sunday is a day to spend as you please.  Come down for the day, bring a picnic lunch or dinner and enjoy. The snack bar will be open.

Monday, May 30thAfter the parades, come down to the Club for the Commissioning of the South Bay Cruising Club.  They borrow our Club as they have no permanent structure of their own and hold their season opening festivities with us.  They have food and drink for purchase.  This is always a fun event to attend and make new friends and renew acquaintances with old friends.

Gardeners Needed:  Mary Schneller is in need of volunteers for Sat. and Sun. 5/15 &16 to clean up the flower areas.  She also needs help again the following weekend, Sat. and Sun.  5/21 & 22, to do the planting.  Any and all help is needed.  It doesn’t matter what your talent, Mary will find a job for you.  Please give her a call at 587-6236.

House Committee: To date, the painting of the downstairs clubhouse area is (90) percent compete thanks to the help of Warren Light, Gerard Costello, Gary Guarino and Tom Devine.  Saturdays, May 7th, 14th and 21st, we will be working on the porch area (if Mother Nature cooperates).  Otherwise, we always have a backup plan.   Our Club was built on the spirit of cooperation and volunteerism.  This is how we exist today. We all know how difficult it is to find some extra time, however, our Club needs your help. The Babylon Yacht Club is your Club and your Club needs you. If every member gave an hour or two there would be no need to constantly request your help.  You will be amazed at the fun you will have and the friendships you can make.  Be an example to the children and show them the joys of getting involved and helping one another.  Please call Dick Patwell at 587-4206.  If you are available during the week but not on weekends, Dick will find something for you to do.  Call him.
