SEPTEMBER 21ST HAPPY
HOUR
The September 21st
Happy Hour was a huge success with members being served a variety of delicious
appetizers by Dawn & Rich Klein, Laura & Paul Riportella,
Adrienne & Larry Camesa, Renee & Jim Mattera, Maureen & Sal Rendino.
Cindy & Gary Kaplan and Jeanine & Joe Quicker.
This crew stepped in and took over this Happy Hour for the club at the last
minute and deserves our appreciation for doing so. The food enjoyed by the
members attending this event included grilled chicken and fresh mozzarella
sandwiches, taco salad, past salad, chili, wings and seven choices for dessert.
Our thanks again to this crew for a job well done.
Fireside
Brunch
BYC Fireside Brunch was held
Sunday, October 2nd. Hosted by Kate and Dick Patwell, Doug and Peggy
Williamson, Barbara and Gil Schlerf, Mary Freund,
June Schuler, Lee Lambert, Carol McTigue, Jane and
Tom Kane, Gordon and Nancy Parker, Paul and Terry Elmstrom,
the Brunch has become a BYC favorite. Although there is usually a fire going, the
weather was magnificent and no fire was necessary. Many members were able
to eat outside on the patio. Paul Steinberg played a variety of
songs on the piano; always a nice touch.
Beefsteak Party (Ghost Writer)
If you’ve been
staying away from yacht club parties because you’re tired of standing in line
with 300 strangers to get a handful of cold refried beans and a shot of tequila
you should have come to the September 24th Beefsteak. Unlike the
annual Mexican Prison Party you could have joined 60 fellow members for a
beautiful evening of cocktails, hors d’oeurves, grilled steaks and choice
desserts.
As with
most endeavors that look effortless on the outside the reality is that behind
the scenes cruel discipline and ruthless efficiency are required. But without
Commodoress Mary Schneller who could be counted on to put pedals to metal and
keep noses to grindstones? We were lucky to have Eileen “Fitzy” Schroeder take
command of the kitchen. And just as every Bonnie has her
Besides Eileen & John the horde of
hosts included Muriel and Kevin Tenety, Trish and Fred Reimer, Cathy McShane
and Ed DeRudder, Laura and Gary Ferrugiari, Maureen and Lew Colascione and Anne
and Kieran McShane
REGATTA: Pete Capitain/Jack Albanese
The BYC – SBCC Challenge Cup reschedule for Saturday, September 24th was again cancelled
due to racers’ previous commitments. The
balance of the season is similarly challenged to come up with two teams able to
compete, so the Challenge Cup will not be held this year.
Corinthian
#3, on Sunday, September 25th, was well
attended with eight boats. Race
Committee, Mike Einsetler, set up the D course with the finish off the
reviewing stand of the BYC. From an
exciting start with too many boats in too little space, we tacked to the Green
9, reached to the 1 in Bay Shore, then tacked all the way back to finish at the
dock.

The Phenomenon of
the Flying Scot (Barbara Schaefer)
Designed in 1957 by Gordon K. (Sandy) Douglass, The Flying
Scot is a 19-foot day sailor. It has a
large, deep cockpit ideal for family sailing and comfortable enough to hold up
to eight people. It’s a competitive boat that is easily tailored and can be
launched in as little as 12” of water.
Still in production by Flying Scot, Inc., strict class rules exist to
prevent design changes that could make older Scots obsolete.
The subject here is a Flying Scot that was no longer needed,
perhaps no longer wanted, given away for free.
Happily adopted by the new owners, the Scot arrived at the BYC in
August. Within minutes interest was
stirred. Help was offered to rig
it. A crew was immediately available to
sail it. Two hours later the crew
disembarked and the buzz began.
Within two weeks the Flying Scot had become the “It” girl at
the dock. It is something special to see
an old 19 foot boat generate excitement, discussion and camaraderie among
members new and old, those powered by sail or engine. A boat that could have easily ended up in the
scrap yard is getting a second chance with people who embrace it. While the Scot’s outward appearance has seen
better days, this little boat, dubbed “Mostly Blue”, has a shine all its
own.
The founding members stated the Club’s purposes were to
encourage members to become proficient in the handling of their yachts and to
promote sociability and recreation among its members. Hats off to Dan and Victoria McMillan for
personifying these purposes and sharing the boat with the Club.

Fall
Membership Meeting
The Fall Membership Meeting was held on
Wednesday, September 28th.
This was the meeting for the members to voice their concerns and/or comments
about the Club. There were several
complaints with regard to the children of our Club. Some of the children seem to be
unattended. It was brought to the
Board’s attention that perhaps some of our members are not aware of all of the
House Rules. All House Rules can be
found in your Yearbook. If you are ever
in doubt, you can ask. Another concern voiced was dress code among
our members. Many do not seem to know
what is appropriate to wear to some of our parties. This will be addressed in future
newsletters. There were several other
discussions with regard to the running of the Club and if you have any
suggestions, comments or concerns, we hope to see you at the Spring Membership
Meeting. That’s the time to speak
up.
Annual

The Annual Meeting will be held on Wednesday,
October 26th at

The season is not being rushed, but if you plan on taking your boat out for the
season, remember that the boatyard gate is only operable during business hours.
These hours are posted around the Club.
Both BYC pianos have been tuned. Please have your children refrain from
playing the pianos. Thank you.
