Schedule
Changes
The annual
Bass Tournament has been changed. The
date is Saturday, October 29th with a rain date of October 30th.
The Captain’s Meeting will be Friday, October 28th. Watch for further information.
Luncheons
A
fabulous luncheon was hosted by Megan Kelly and her committee; Amy Moore, Lello
Ryan. and Chris Kerrigan on Aug. 9th. It
was the first luncheon they presented and they had some wonderful new
ideas. The attendees were so impressed by the flowers on the table,
the colorful napkins, and the gorgeously printed menu. The food was
delicious and beautifully presented. Megan has agreed to do another
luncheon next year, we can hardly wait.
Jane
Warren and her committee; Gail Askoff, Katherine Fallon, Mary Freund, Dot Hall,
Marge Burns, and Lucy Trumble volunteered to hostess the last luncheon
which was held on Aug.23rd.
Thank you ladies, without your help there would have been no luncheon. We
feasted on shrimp salad, asparagus salad, and Klondike Ice Cream Bars
for dessert. What a delicious menu.
FASHION SHOW
The
third annual fashion show was held on Wed. Aug.23rd. Ascent, a School for Individuals
with Autism, was the beneficiary of the $7000 we raised. As the program stated,
"We Never Stand So Tall As When We Stoop to Help a Child! The
weather was spectacular, the room was decorated to perfection, and about 200
people had a fabulous time. It couldn't have happened without the
dedication, love, and countless hours of hard work by so many people.
Barbara Schaefer did it all: She took reservation, collected the
money for the tickets, and handled the room setup (which wasn't an easy task);
The descriptions of the contents of each basket were graphically designed and
printed by Barbara, (what talent); She served as the MC of the event; donated
items for the raffle, and last, but not least, she was always there for anyone
who needed her help. What an awesome woman.
Jennifer Henry McCabe spent a good part of the month walking the
streets of
Lello Ryan made the raffles look like a work of art (which they
were). She spent countless hours putting baskets together, buying items
to complete a basket when necessary, and organizing everyone and everything. Jennifer
McCleer helped a great deal as part of the basket committee, buying many
items to wrap the baskets and helping to put them together. The
attractive program was another of Lello's projects. Another phenomenal
woman.
Debbie Goodwin & Maggie Shaw put on a terrific
fashion show. Many hours were spent lining up models, visiting the
various stores involved in the show, and coordinating music and
script. Coordinating the fashions for this show was a huge
undertaking and everyone appreciates your hard work. The audience loved
it!
Rita Louden & Alice Rogers served delicious cheese platters,
desserts, and beverages. They have been doing this job for 3 years
and continue to do an outstanding job. We have our own professional
caterers, aren't we the lucky ones.
Jen McCleer was on the basket committee and did a great job helping out
when necessary, she bought the supplies for putting the baskets together and
helped set up the room for the show. Thanks Jen for your help.
Linda Varady not only presented us with terrific vintage clothing from
the 60's but helped with the show from the very beginning. She helped set
up the room for the show and also made the flower arrangements. What a
gal!
Yvonne Albanese, our own resident artist once again designed a
beautiful poster, tickets and program cover. Another talented Yacht Club
member who is always willing to help out when called upon. We loved the art
work!
Lisa Piening & Bernadette Weldon, you did a super job in
helping to set up the raffles. That was not an easy job, trying to fit
all the prizes on the available tables.
Paul Steinberg, the piano music at the beginning of the show
helped make the occasion so much more festive and enjoyable. Thanks for your
help.
Finally,
I'd like to say thank you to all the people who donated items for the
fundraiser as well as to the attendees who were so generous in buying tickets
for the raffles. It takes an entire Yacht Club to raise $7000 and I feel
so lucky to be part of such a wonderful group of people.
Entertainment
Afterguard Party
A BYC tradition since 1975, the Afterguard Party on August
21st was again a most successful cocktail party. Members and guest enjoyed great hors
d’ouevres, assorted sandwiches, the clam bar, and music by the
Banjo-aires. According to the
dictionary, “Afterguard” are “the seamen who handle the after sails – ordinary
unskilled seamen.” However, the crew
that worked the party are all highly skilled:
The St Johns, Corbetts, Caputos, Devines, Sue Howell, Molly Blue, Betsy
Davison, Libby Orr, Shirley Skeffington and cashiers Barbara and Brian Maher. If we missed anyone, we apologize…the help of
all the members who participated is truly appreciated. You can always get a
good drink at the bar when Ed Ricketts or Jim Rafter pour you one. We had a few surprise visitors who haven’t
been around the Club for many years. It
has almost become a reunion for some.
Some of you may remember the Faas Family – well, Jimmy, Tommy and Mary
were all there with spouses; Bob and Dick DeYoung; Ed and Robin (Farrell)
Horsley; Frank and Joan (Hettich) Lipp; Mary Gallagher and her brother-in-law
Dick Freeman; Kristi Milligi and her brother Mike; Libby St. John; Abby Blue;
John Skeffington and Joanne; Jeff Rettalliata; Ellen Garvey and more.
Upcoming Events:
Beefsteak – There is a Beefsteak scheduled for September 24. Again, for information and reservations, call the Grecos or the McGowans. Members only.
Fireside Brunch –October 2. Just a reminder - the new hours for the
Fireside Brunch are
Happy Hour Help Need –
We have no hosts for the Sept 21st Happy Hour. Please call Paul Greco or Tom McGowan if you are interested. It would be a shame to have to cancel another one. Remember, happy hours are only $12! And, just a reminder, Jackets and Ties are requested at Happy Hours.
REGATTA - Pete
Capitain/Jack Albanese
Friday, August 26th was the Corinthian

out due to equipment problems.

Juniors
Thanks to Paul Steinberg for a well organized and great
Snapper Derby, Raft Race, Huck Finn contest, and Field Day. Paul was able to hold off any heavy rain to
get every event in without a hitch.
Absolutely amazing!
Congratulations to all the winners at the Snapper Derby
& Raft Race. Helping Paul were Anthony & Eileen Abbott, Joe, Pam &
Heather Cooper, and Kristine Calamari.
Thanks for the help! Our judges for the Huck Finn contest had a real
difficult time deciding who was the real Huck Finn. Thanks to Libby Orr,
Shirley Skeffington and Lucy Trumble for picking all the winners!
55 Kids participated in Field day. Every one was a winner, with ice cream prizes
for everyone. Thanks to all the parents who helped out being judges & team
captains.
80 hungry Kids and their parents had a wonderfully prepared
brunch cooked by Master Pancake maker Doug Williamson. Thanks also go to all
those who helped get the brunch served: JYC Commodore Derek Williamson, Peggy
Williamson; Kathy, Larry & Lauren Olsen; and Gary, Trudi & Lizzie
Guarino.
Thanks again to everyone who helped out to make the day so
successful and fun for the kids.

Pool News
Pool Sanitation
A serious health issue closed the pool on
the afternoons of August fourth and twelfth. Someone defecated in the
pool. To prevent bather illness the pool
was immediately closed in order to begin chemical treatment. High levels of chlorine were applied to
control bacteria. The Suffolk Department of Health has strict guidelines that
must be followed at such times to protect the health of bathers. To prevent incidents like this, both BYC
rules and SCDH rules are posted at the pool gate. The Board of Governors insists that parents
take the appropriate steps as posted at the pool gate (swimming diapers) to
prevent a recurrence of this problem. On August fourteenth the SCDH inspected
the pool operation and asked what steps were being taken to prevent pool
contamination. In some cases we could be
required to close the pool for eight hours.
Mike and Dennis Barrett make a daily effort to maintain correct chlorine
levels. Out of courtesy for your fellow club members, please follow health
rules to prevent disease and pool closure.
Lounge Use
Recently some club members have come to the
pool and found all the lounge chairs occupied. Further inquiry showed that children
were using the chairs. There have even
been cases where parents have refused to remove their children’s belongs! Children must give up lounges to adult
members as listed in the club yearbook. Children have no entitlement to
lounges, but may use them if not needed by adult members. Please cooperate by removing children’s items
when requested. This rule is clearly
stated at the pool entrance.
POOL GUEST FEE $5.00 PER PERSON
As you should know, fees collected for
guests who use the pool assist in defraying the cost of its maintenance and
operation. This revenue source is part
of our annual budget.
Unfortunately, it seems that this year there
has been a significant number of members who have brought guests to the pool
and neglected to pay the $5 per person fee.
This fee applies to EVERY guest, regardless of age, who is on the pool
deck. The procedure requires that
members sign in at the pool and pay the fee.
It is that simple.
The success of the Club rests with the
integrity of its members to follow the rules, even when no one is looking. Rather than institute a more stringent (and
costly) procedure for anyone to get on the pool deck, we ask your cooperation
in following the current policy of paying for any guest that you bring.
