August 16th Happy Hour
The August 16th Happy
Hour is being hosted by Anne & Mike
Glynn. Members only -
AFTERGUARD
PARTY
The Afterguard Party
is set for
As the result of a
number of situations, which have occurred this season, we thought it best to
remind the membership at large of several things relating to the parties, happy
hours and other social events held at the club.
While most members are well aware of the following, there are a few who
either do not or, worse, do not believe the following apply to them:
1.
First and foremost all parties, happy
hours and other social events are run by member-volunteers. These member-volunteers are not hosting or
helping out at these events for the opportunity to be treated as anything but
members at the events. None of these
people were put on earth to be anyone's indentured servant (as a few have
apparently believed). Treat your fellow
members, as you want to be treated at all times.
2.
Happy hours are just that, Happy
Hours. For $12 per person do not expect
to get a full course meal. Happy hours are and always will be an occasion
where, for a minimal fee, you can enjoy the company of fellow members while
enjoying a drink and a few hors d'oeuvres.
If you were to go to a bar and do the same you would be paying far more
for this opportunity. In addition, when
you are helping yourself to food at a happy hour please remember to not stack
your plate with food so that other members also get to enjoy hors d'oervres
since there is a limited amount of food; you can always go back for more after
other members have a chance to try the food.
3.
If you are not a member volunteering by
hosting or helping out at an event, do not go into the
kitchen for any reason unless it is to stick your head in for
thirty seconds to say 'thank you and job well done' and to then get out. The kitchen is a very busy place during
events and members volunteering at any event do not want or appreciate having
to work around other members who come into the kitchen. If you do not think this rule could possibly
apply to your behavior in going into the kitchen during events; it does.
4.
Make reservations well in advance to give
hosts the opportunity to properly plan food requirements and to not have too
much or too little food at an event.
5. If
you have any complaints or constructive criticism, tell it to the Entertainment
Committee representative(s) who are present at every event; do not bother the
hosts or member volunteers with it during an event since they are busy
running the event.
Annual
Clambake / Lobster Feast:
The annual Clambake
organized by Gary and Trudi Guarino fed over 240
members, guests and crew who were treated to a seafood orgy.
Special thanks go to
Master Lobster and Mussel Chef Bud Caputo, with assistance from Joe Cooper,
Barry Corbett and John Bell. Bud can now
be credited with this year’s new revolutionary weight loss system. You know the old saying: “If you can’t stand
the heat, get out of the kitchen”. Well these guys didn’t. I heard at last count they collectively lost
about 20 pounds! It was sweltering under
that tent. You worked hard over those
steaming hot pots to cook those lobsters to perfection and everyone appreciated
you efforts!
Ken’s Shucking Shack
was busier than ever. Opening two bushels of little necks, Ken Goodwin had
assistance from Jack Albanese & Rich Tesoro. Amazingly no band-aids were required and all fingers
were accounted for! Thanks guys for all that hard
work.
Working hard in the
kitchen were Larry & Kathy Olsen, Jeff Bieselin, Emil Nagel, Ken &
Debbie Goodwin, new members Tom & Michelle Milligan, Rich & Adrienne Tesoro, Andrew & Liza Sims,
Katie Olsen and Annie Guarino. Charged
with the unenviable task of washing all those dishes and “yucky” pots were
Lauren Goodwin, and Taylor Kordish.
Thanks also to all the
volunteer bartenders that kept the thirsty crowd at bay. We appreciate your pitching in to help out
and taking time out from your party.
Thanks to all the
members and guests that came out and supported us to make this party so much
fun and so successful. Can’t wait to do
it all again next year!
Women’s Committee submitted by Irene
Morris
Our second women's
luncheon was held on July 12th. Once again we were lucky to
have Sandy Matamala and her hard working crew; Jackie Miller, Janet Hogan,
Carol McTigue, Eileen Farrell, Inez Poppe, and Sally Shiebler prepare a
delicious lunch. Homemade chicken salad and creamsicle ice cream
with berries is always a winner. Thanks ladies for a job well done.
The next luncheon was
hostessed by one of our newer members, Megan Kelly and her committee; Kate
Ranieri, Karen Gambino, Joan DeRosa, Amy Moore, Barbara Krucher, and Laura
Riportella. They did an amazing job, from the fresh flowers on the table
and the flowered napkins to the wonderful lunch. Quiche and ice
cream sandwiches with berries were enjoyed by all. We loved it.
Grace Ricketts
will chair our fourth luncheon on Tuesday August 8th.
Please call Lucy Trumble for reservations if you haven't signed up yet at
669-7058. Remember, you don't have to play cards to attend, invite
some friends for a visit, enjoy the beautiful view, and enjoy a tasty lunch.
The last luncheon is
scheduled for August 22nd. Our hostess will be the
talented Barbara Schaeffer. This luncheon was not on the original
schedule but it is a happening. I'd like to run our auction during this
luncheon so now's the time to search for any treasures you were
saving for this event. Please bring the donated items the day of the
luncheon. This would be a good
opportunity for some of our younger members to pick up some real bargains. Barbara's
number is 669-3646.
Regatta NewS – Joe Mullé & Ken Goodwin
Not much has happened
since the Governors Cup but August will be a pretty active month. On the horizon are the Men’s & Women’s
Championships and two Corinthian Races.
Rumor has it some of the ladies in the adult sailing program are going
to give it a go be called top sailor, so lets make sure we’re down there to
cheer them on!
We did have our One
Design Warm Up races Sunday with 3 Flying Juniors and one Flying Scott
participating; unfortunately the wind fizzled out and we were brought in by the
chase boat, but the crews had a great time and hope there is wind next time.
Want to give racing a try - then show up on
the dock! Most boats are looking to
shanghai crew but just tell them you’re looking to sail and they’ll help you
toward the boat. No experience is needed
just ability to duck, laugh and have fun.
Be down at the dock about an hour before start time or contact the
Regatta Chairs and we’ll make sure we put you on a good boat!
Need/want to stay up
to speed on Regatta? Then sign up for
Regatta News through the web site, many of the events have last minute updates,
so stay informed.
While
last minute & I don’t have all details - congratulations to Dan McMillan
& crew aboard That’s All! for
placing first at GSBYRA’s 100th Raceweek in the PHRF Non Spin
class!! And it came down to the last
race of the last day. Way to go Dan!!

Talent Show
We would like to thank
Gayle Comerford for all her efforts organizing and putting on one of the best
talent shows ever. There were over 30
very talented kids who participated and they were absolutely fantastic.
Gayle wrote the
following:
This just in...The
2006 BYC Talent Show was in the spotlight July 23rd, with our
superstar judges including Mrs. Fran Pasch, Mrs. Shirley Skeffington,
Mrs. Libby Orr, & Mr. & Mrs. John &
Margaret Bell. All who participated were so good that it was a tough year
for the judges, but the decision were made:
A very special thank
you goes to our very talented MC, Cassidy Comerford, and none of this could
have been heard without the expertise of Mr. Nick Giempietro.
Great Job to all of those who participated, you should all be very proud of
your performances!

ADULT SAILING submitted by
Dave Hyer
Adult sailing now has
taken the lessons to the max, I was teaching the
Monday Class how not to attempt taking a Flying Scot out of the basin in 20 mph Southerly.
With five students, I tried to sail out, but instead of going
forward, I started to sail backwards, did a death roll and almost
flipping the boat right in the basin. With quick thinking from Joe Mullé who just happened to be at the right place at the
right time, the boat and crew avoided a dunking. The Commander (Greg Schneller) was quite happy that I was the
first to try to sail out. So, the class and in view of the members on the pool
deck, got to see just what you should not do when sailing in small boats.
Tuesday’s class was able to sail in the Flying Scots but the Commander switched boats, giving me Dan McMillan's boat while he took the club boat. Once out on the bay, I realized that the main sheet was reversed and needed to be re-run through the blocks. While this was going on the jib sheet was flapping around and pulled out the ring ding on the port stay disconnecting the stay from the boat. I noticed that stay was off just before tacking on to port, otherwise the mast would have come down crashing on the boat. I was able the secure the stay and return back to the basin where I attempted to fix the problem. Everything was going fine, as I was about to insert the pin, the stay slipped out of my hand and yes the mast did come down crashing into the water bending the fitting that is use to put the mast in place. My luck was not working that day! Once again, the Commander being that lucky guy that he is; was able to escape this small problem, because he had changed boats with me. The Commander really should play lotto more often. In the end, we were able to fix the mast and step the mast back onto the boat.
SWIM TEAM NEWS submitted
by Catherine McShane
The BYC Swim Team is
having a banner season. Led by the new
head coaches Shelby and Ally (who are doing a great job) the team went
undefeated in regular meets this season.
On Monday July 31st the team will swim in the Qualifier meet
at Unqua Corinthian Yacht Club and hopefully field a strong team for the
North/South Meet to be held Saturday August 5th at Northport Yacht
Club. For directions and times click on
the swimming link on the home page of our website – www.babylonyachtclub.org
A
special thanks to all those 15-17 year old swimmers who made guest appearances
to round out our team and help us win against our arch rivals Unqua Corinthian
Yacht Club. Nice job
by all the swimmers all season long – keep up the good work!!
Reminder
to all swim team parents – if you haven’t already – please bring $10 per family
to the next meet or practice. Nancy Dittmeier is collecting for coaches’
gifts.
Also don’t miss the
end of the season Swim Team dinner Thursday August 10th at

party, don’t ask to fill the cooler; volunteers needn’t have to worry about
ice.
q
Wash your dishes after using them! It’s your job and yours alone.
q
Please do not remove any
dishes or utensils from the clubs premises. They are not there for you to
take home.
q
Upstairs Happy Hours – if there is a line
of people in the hall towards the Commodore’s Room, it’s pretty certain they
are waiting their turn at the bar.
q
If you have a complaint, comment, or idea
- speak to the manager or a board member.
q
Dockage – 72-hour limit. That’s seventy-two hours! And please turn off your AC units if not
spending the night aboard the boat.
q
There’s no horseplay on the pool deck –
The Staff has been instructed to lasso offenders.
q
Throwing sand or rocks – BAD
q
Rocking/playing on the flagpole – VERY
VERY BAD (Recently someone unwitting untied the Ensign, it was caught
before touching the ground; please do not be afraid to let others know you’re
watching. - Editor’s comment & pet peeve)!!
q
Do not park on the basketball court
unless there is a scheduled party and over flow parking is needed
q
If a boat is arriving or departing the
dock – Lend a hand!! Experience is not
necessary, the skipper will tell you where they want the line and then proceed
to retie it their liking; so don’t take offense.
