Grace Ricketts, you
did it again! You and your great committee; Lucy Trumble, Mary Rinklin, Nan
Hanaway, Mary Jane Young, Marilyn Winter, and Mary Freund served a wonderful
lunch. Tasty quiche, orange Jello salad, and delicious carrot cake, was
enjoyed by all. Loved those white tablecloths on every
table. Mary Rinklin won her second basket of cheer this
summer. When's the cocktail party, Mary? Thanks ladies for all your hard
work.
Our next (and last)
luncheon will be held on August 22nd. Please bring all your treasures to
the Yacht Club the morning of the luncheon for our annual auction.
Barbara Schaefer will be our hostess and from what I've heard, you're in for a
real treat. Please call her at 669-3646 for reservations.
Congratulations
ladies!! Once again you've helped us run a highly successful fashion
show, in spite of the heat. Thanks for all your contributions, hard work,
and commitment. We couldn't have done it without you. We raised an
amazing $7000 for our two designated charities; Suffolk County Coalition Against Domestic Violence, and Ascent: A School for Autistic
Children. In addition to this money, many people contributed to our Angel
Boutique which was run by Yvonne Albanese, (who by the way,
did all the shopping for the items in the boutique.)
These items have been
delivered to needy women and children in the shelter.
Barbara Schaefer, once
again, did it all. She handled the tickets, seating and room
set-up. Then Barbara and Jen Henry collected raffles from local merchants
and restaurants. The beautiful graphic descriptions for all those
outstanding raffles were written and printed by her. Another role she
played so well was emceeing the entire evening. Last, but not least, you
and Lello Ryan coordinated the entire affair. You are an amazing woman
and we all appreciate your total commitment these past two months.
Lello Ryan was a
creative genius with the raffles and the events' special details. Just to
mention a few, she took care of the grand prizes, created the arbor that all
the models walked through, the potted plants, and especially the Touched By An Angel Boutique. The baskets were artfully
created for people to donate and she decorated, decorated, and decorated
almost all the baskets received. Another extremely
talented woman that we at the BYC can be proud of.
Yvonne Albanese
designed those beautiful tickets, as well as the program and the posters.
She managed the Touched By An Angel Boutique with the
help of Gail Walker. You're wonderful Yvonne.
Debbie Goodwin
was our fashion coordinator once again. Thanks for lining up the
participating merchants, the models and coordinating everyone and everything,
not an easy job to do. The clothes were beautiful and the models looked
great.
Eileen Abbot,
Nancy Dittmeier, Nina Bruno, Kathy Klemens, Kathleen Bisson, Julia Rogers, and
Susan Dunnells did a bang up job in the kitchen with the food. You
served the perfect dessert for a steamy evening. Thanks to all of you for
your efforts.
Megan Kelly, another
one of our talented women, made the beautiful creative centerpieces.
Loved them!
Nick Giampetro,
your sound system enhanced the entire evening, you not only set it up but
you ran it for us too. Thanks so much for your time, energy, and
talent. It can't be easy being one of the only men in a room full of so
many women.
Finally,
our sincere thanks to all the businesses, restaurants and our members who were
so generous with the raffle donations. Your
support and contributions are what made this event so successful.
Regatta News submitted
by Joe Mullé & Ken Goodwin
While the summer
season is winding down the Regatta season is in full swing. On Friday August 11th 12 boats
competed in Corinthian Race #3 held in blustery Northerlies with Team Dunnells
aboard Chanson continuing their sweep of the Corinthian Series; a close second
was the Reichel family aboard Silver Bullet and third pace went to Dan
McMillan’s That’s All. Thanks to Dan
McMillan and Will Walters serving as Race Committee, (And for allowing his
crew & I to race her – Ed)
The following day was
the BYC Men’s & Women’s Championship in very shifty Northerlies. The top BYC Female Sailors – The McLoughlin
Sisters Taryn Birkmire & Maria Parascandola
sailed some quick races while it was close racing in the Men’s Division with
Ken & Lauren Goodwin taking honors and Jim & Emma Glynn second. Thanks to Pete Capitian and Bernadette
Broderick who assisted in running the races.
There are still plenty
of races scheduled into October, make sure you head out on the water because

Swim team news
submitted by Catherine McShane
The BYC Swim Team concluded
its season Saturday August 5th with a strong showing at the North/South meet
held at Northport Yacht Club. Although
the North was victorious the South team certainly made them work for it and all
the BYC swimmers did a great job.
The BYC Swim Team went
undefeated in regular meets this season and everyone celebrated at the Swim
Team dinner last Thursday evening. A
very special thank you to Shelby O’Rourke, the Head Swim Coach and Ally
Afflixio the Assistant Swim Coach. Great
job ladies! The team and the coaches this season could not have done it without
the help of several of our members – a BIG THANKS goes to all of the following
members for helping out with timing, line-ups and officiating at the meets,
sweating behind the BBQ tables and bake sales at the home meets, and for
various other types of support – Joan Haedrich, Gail Walker, Patty Matthes,

Dear Fellow Sailor:
A Centennial of
Sailing is quite an accomplishment for the sixteen clubs that make up the Great
South Bay Yacht Racing Association (GSBYRA). We aren’t just looking backward,
however. We are looking to support future sailing by embarking on a fund
raising project to replace our aging fleet of Mobjacks, which we have used for
championship events for more than 25 years. After a comprehensive study and
much discussion, we agreed on a new boat and a new ownership format.
The
Boat
The boat is the Flying
Scot. The Scot was selected because of its
Strong national
organization
The versatility of the
boat
Suitability as an
adult and junior trainer
Strong manufacturer
support
Competitive longevity
Reasonable cost
The Format
The new ownership
format calls for GSBYRA to own two boats and for each club to purchase their
own Scot. Further, GSBYRA will own a sail inventory that will be used by the
club boats and the two GSBYRA boats in the championship events. The ownership
structure is highly advantageous because:
Club boats can be used
throughout the season
Maintenance of the
boats is distributed throughout the Association
The sail inventory
levels the competition as the hulls are relatively even
The two GSBYRA boats
provide some cushion for sailors whose club may not have a Scot immediately
The US Sailing Ladder
Championships that are the principal focus of this initiative are:
The GSBYRA Gulden
Trophy (junior-triple handed) – Sears Cup
The GSBYRA Furman Bowl
(inter-club match racing) – Prince of Wales Trophy
The GSBYRA Fenner Bowl (men) – Mallory Cup
The GSBYRA Morgan Bowl
(women) – Adam’s Trophy
The Cost
It will cost approximately
$50,000 to buy two boats and the sail inventory. We need your help and ask for
your generosity. The US Sailing ladder events are an important pathway to high
level competition. It is up to us to ensure that our sailors continue to have
these opportunities open to them.
