OPENING DAY PARTY

The Opening Day Party will be held on Saturday, May 27th and is being hosted by Kristine and John Calamari (587-7021). The party is from 7 to 11 p.m. and costs $35 per person. Please make your reservations early. New members will be welcomed by the Board of Governors at a pre-party party from 6 to 7 p.m. and will be guests of the Board at the Opening Day Party. Volunteers are needed to man shifts at the bar for the party. Please call Kristine if you can tend bar for an hour or so during the party.

    *****

Please remember that the kick-off starts at 12 noon on Saturday as we all gather around the flag pole.  Come on down and meet your fellow members as the Board, both past and present, raise the flag for another successful season at the BYC. The crowd then moves over to the JYC and our youth will begin their season with a bang and the raising of their flag as well.  All of this activity will be followed by hot dogs, beer and soda at no charge.  Come on down and greet the season. *****

Happy Hour - Wednesday, June 7 starts a BYC tradition that dates back to who knows when?!  From 6:30 ‘til 8:30, drinks and snacks are all included for $12 per person.  The kick off HH will be hosted by Barbara & Larry Schaefer and Jennifer and Ed McCabe.  This is a good one and you won’t want to miss it.  For those of you new to the Club, Happy Hour dress code is business casual. Sorry, this is for Members Only. No reservations necessary.

Beefsteak - Saturday, June 10 is the first beefsteak of the season.  Ray & Joan Uriarte are your hosts.  Call them for reservations at 661-6856.  The price for a beefsteak is $30 per person and you will walk away with a very full tummy.  The beefsteaks are a bit more formal than your normal party.  The men generally wear jackets and ties and the ladies dress accordingly.  The Beefsteaks are for Members Only.

Father’s Day Brunch - Don’t miss this one.  The Father’s Day Brunch will be Sunday, June 18.  This is another BYC favorite, hosted by Rick & Janet Florin and crew.  The brunch starts at 9 am and goes on ‘til noon. All you can eat and no one has to cook (except Rick & crew). Members and guests are welcome at this annual event and the cost is $6 for adults and $4 for children.  The dress for this one is casual. No reservations are necessary.

Happy Hour - Wednesday, June 21 our HH will be hosted by Amy & Tom Moore, Steve and Kris Fontana and crew.  Again, HH’s are from 6:30 to 8:30 and the cost is $12 per person.  Members only.  No reservations necessary.

Thank you to those members who have stepped up to the plate and decided to take on the July 5th Happy Hour (Sharon & George Donnelly); the August 30th Happy Hour (Jim & Barbara English); and the September 9th Party (theme still undecided), new members Michael and Cathy Hart.  We still need hosts for two more Happy Hours in September….anybody??

House Committee

Dick Patwell and Gary Guarino are looking for some help.  The Club will be open on Saturday mornings and is in need of some painters and miscellaneous odd jobs (deli runs, etc.).  Any amount of time and effort will be gladly accepted and appreciated.  No experience necessary.  If you are available at other times but not on Saturdays, Dick will arrange that too.  The House Committee is very accommodating.  Please call Dick at 587-4206 or Gary at 422-0394. Remember, Opening Day is coming and we want our Club to look its best.  Thank you.

REGATTA

On April 1st we had a well-attended Skipper’s Meeting where numerous ideas were brought up but the underlying comment was more racing!  So we’ve done that; we added 2 Corinthian Races and a few informal One Design races throughout the season.  The new race dates have been added to the schedule, so please check the BYC web site for the latest updates and if you haven’t all ready, sign up for the BYC Regatta Updates! It’s quick easy & will keep you up to date on Regatta.

Some important Regatta dates;

Friday June 2nd - Corinthian Race #1 - start time 1900, this will be the kick off of the Corinthian Series.

Sunday June 11th – GSBYRA Men’s & Women’s Championships – BYC is the race committee for this event at Bay Shore Yacht Club in Mobjacks.  If you have a crew, please get in touch with the Regatta Chair to get the paperwork started.

Friday June 16th – The Babylon Club – A South Bay Cruising Club organized race with a post race event at the BYC.  Start time is 1900.  BYC sailors are encouraged to participate in this well attended event.

We’re in the final stretches of completing plans for the BYC July 4th Invitation on July 1st & 2nd, but we are still in need of volunteers both shore side and afloat, if you could devote some of the weekend we’ll make sure you have a fun time at it!

Aquacise is coming…

Roberta Woolsey, certified aquatics instructor, will be back this summer to conduct BYC’s 12th annual Aquacise course.  Eight classes will run on Saturday mornings and early Thursday evenings beginning 7/15/06.  Aquacise (exercise in water) is unique in that participants are able to individualize the intensity of the exercises by virtue of their own movement.  The resistance provided by the water is as gentle or as forceful as one’s action against it.  To register, be sure to sign the Aquacise enrollment list posed in the Manager’s office.  Beginners welcome.

Neat Stuff

Got a boat? Got a motor?  Paul Steinberg brought to our attention an excellent paper, written by Philip Gaudreau, on the new fuel formulations and how they affect your engine and fuel system.  It’s informative, non-technical, and an easy read.  Find it on the ‘Neat links’ page of the website.

2005 Inshore/Offshore Tournament by Barry Corbett

11 Boats and about 30 anglers participated in the 2005Annual BYC Inshore/Offshore tournament held last October 29th.  The weather was a little cold but fishable, and our illustrious Commodore even showed up to fish.

The results were:

1st Place fish - Peter Samartano, a guest on the Hydro Therapy

2nd Place fish –Bob Greene on the Irish Eyes

3rd Place fish- Andrew Adamson, a guest on the Hannah Belle

and the Captain’s trophy went to Sandy Shanks

A special thanks to Alyssa Van Bourgondien for providing a delicious home made beef stew with all the works for the wet, tired, and cold fishermen.

Sad Note:  The BYC has lost another Senior member.  Carlin deMurias passed away last month and will leave a void at the Club.  Carlin and Ram were members since 1948.  Carlin was always ready with a wave and a smile and helped out during many of our Regatta luncheons and women’s luncheon.  On behalf of the entire BYC membership, we send our condolences to Chris and Elena and their family.

Co-Ed Adult Sailing

The Adult Sailing program will be held on Monday evenings from 6:00 to 8:00 for six weeks and the cost will be $200 per person.  The Monday program will be limited to 12 sailors.  If more than 12 members sign up then a Tuesday session will be added.  Sign up will be on opening day.  Pre-Registration is required now, see above.  Don’t be shy; Adult Sailing is for guys as well as gals.
