Regatta
News
The 2007 Regatta Committee is
looking forward to another successful racing program. As we’ve suddenly been besieged by the cold
days of winter, the Regatta Committee has finalized the 2007 regatta schedule
which is up on the website.
Please mark your calendars-
The 80th
Annual BYC July 4th Invitational
has been scheduled for June 30th & July 1st. Soon
we’ll be looking for volunteers, if you can volunteer some time the BYC would
appreciate it. We’ll need chase/safety
patrol boats, Race Committees, and shore-side personnel. Don’t worry if your sailing experiences are
limited, we’ll make sure you have fun.
The 1st
Corinthian Race will be Friday June 8th
– First gun 1900
And remember – “It’s
better to volunteer than be volunteered”
Any questions please contact

Renovation/Restoration Plans
As you are all aware, the Board called a
special meeting set for January 24th at the West Islip Library. For those of you who missed it, here’s a
recap. We had a record number of members
show up for this one – in excess of 70 plus the Board. John Bell, our 2007 Commodore, presented a
slide show that mainly depicted the foundation of the main clubhouse, or lack
of. He gave special attention to the
deterioration of the supporting beams and crumbling cement footings. He pointed out that the entire clubhouse
merely sits on these deteriorated beams but that it is not strapped down
anywhere. There were pictures of other
signs of major wear and tear. For
example, he pointed to the second floor outside deck and the leaks that are
causing problems beneath. John
enlightened us on the need for higher amps for the electrical system. The need to further protect the main
clubhouse from fire was covered by the proposed installation of a dry sprinkler
system as well as some additions to the kitchen area above and around the
stove.
There followed a question and answer period
in which many members expressed their concerns and desires to indeed protect
the clubhouse. There was however, a
major discontent among the members as to how these projects should be
funded. It seems the majority of members
do not wish to be assessed in the amounts proposed. Instead, this majority would like to see
these renovation/restoration projects funded via loans and/or minor assessments
or possibly even a small dues increase.
There was a lot of concern as to the ability of some members to pay such
an assessment as well as dues, sailing and swim programs, etc. There was a concern that the dynamics of the
club might change if we lost 30 – 40 members because of the assessment. The feeling was that we had paid
approximately $450,000 for the pool over a three – five year period without
assessments and they want to do the same with this project. Commodore Bell advised that the Board would
make the final decision on funding, but at this point, we were not married to
any decision.
There were questions with regard to the
specific amounts to be spent on each project as well as on the whole plan. Commodore Bell answered that at this point we
were more concerned with seeking the input of the membership for the projects
to be done, and that further decisions on the specifics would be
forthcoming. It was the general
consensus of the membership that they would like to have another meeting with
the Board when they refine the proposed projects, and Mr. Bell agreed that
another meeting would be scheduled. In fact, at this printing, another meeting
has been scheduled. The meeting will again be at the West
Islip Library on Wednesday, March 7, 2007, at 7:30 PM.
You can find a PowerPoint presentation on the
BYC Website under “photo album”.
