Treasurer – submitted by Brian Maher

In the next few weeks, the bills for the assessment will be mailed to you.  Payment will be due on September1; however, the Board would appreciate payments to be made as soon as possible.

Things are much easier when payments are mailed and not dropped off at the Club.  The more people that become involved with handling checks, the more chance there is for something to go wrong. I ask, then, that all checks be MAILED to:

Babylon Yacht Club

PO Box 614

Babylon, NY 11702

Thanks for your cooperation.

Helpful Careers  submitted by John Bell

The BYC relies heavily on volunteer labor, and often what people do best is what they work at each day. The Board of Governors this year is especially grateful to two members whose professional expertise has been invaluable to the club.

The club insurance policy - even though written in English - is difficult to understand, let alone judge complete and adequate. Dave Hyer was asked to review the current policy and to advise the board on necessary changes or corrections. A professional dialogue between Dave and the insurance agent continued over several months, leading to a more complete and clearly written policy.  Dave’s efforts have provided a policy giving the best coverage, and for that the Board is very grateful.

The current renovation project requires construction knowledge and experience. Irwin Sindeband, a committee member, is a commercial building contractor who has helped guide the direction of the work to be done.  Hours of his personal and professional time have been spent in preparing for the project presentation.  As the project continues over the years, Irwin will continue to provide counsel. We appreciate his efforts on behalf of the BYC.

A Reminder – submitted by John Bell

Wet bathing suits containing chlorine pool water damage furniture, whether in the clubhouse or on the porch. Even if a towel is placed on seating, the wet suit rule prevails.  Please be considerate of club property and obey the rules designed to protect it.

Spring Planting – submitted by Margaret Bell

Most spring weekends find the men of the club climbing ladders and showing off with their power tools. The ladies of the club, however, have more earthy pastimes.  On a recent sunny Saturday, a crew of hard-working women wielded rakes, pruning shears, and trowels as they cleared all pots and flowerbeds of last year’s detritus.  The following Saturday they returned to plant a colorful array of annuals and perennials to be enjoyed by the membership all season.  The BYC ladies who volunteered their valuable time for this task included Eileen Madocks, Chris McGowan, Barbara Maher, Debbie Goodwin, Sandralee Capitain, Mary Lasley, Jill Hoyler, Sue Greco, Kristine Calamari, Robin Regan,Linda Devine, Chrissie Devine, and Margaret Bell. They were assisted by a small group of manservants: Bob Madocks, Tom Devine, John Bell, and Ray Uriarite. Very special thanks goes out to Alyssa and Rick Van Bourgandien, club members and proprietors of Van Bourgandien Nursery, who supplied not only all the plants but also soil, fertilizer, and mulch. As always, Alyssa’s horticultural expertise and great eye for design provided the club with the perfect planting materials and layout.

More “Thank Yous – submitted by Ken Goodwin

The Junior Yacht Club has a new look thanks to Bob Greene and new member Denis Collins.  These two guys replaced the rotten fascia boards on the front of the JYC and gave it a fresh coat of paint.   Great job – thanks!!

Subject: Newsletter - Material Needed

Hi everyone -
I am in need of items for the newsletter.  John, you wanted to write a "Commordore's Column".  Entertainment - I need something from the 1st HH and 1st Beefsteak (already have stuff on the Open Day Party).  Manager - Mike, can you get me club and pool hours and anything else you want in this one.  Regatta - Joe you said you had some special requests with regard to 4th of July volunteers. Anything else that anyone can think of would be helpful.  Oh, yes, Brian, I know you must have some more resignations by now; please can you forward?  Thanks. I'd like to get this to the printer by Thurs AM, right after our Spring Meeting on Wed.

Regatta – submitted by Joe Mulle

We finally got in the first Corinthian Race Friday with 8 boats competing in some windy conditions, past Corinthian King Jerry Dunnells sent the fleet on a Babylon Modified I Rev, with a finish @ the BYC (Or something along those lines).  Grabbing the first was Ken Goodwin’s Intrepid, followed by Jim Reichel’s Silver Bullet in second & rounding out the top three was Pete Capitian’s Sugar Magnolia.  Racing was so close 2nd thru 4th place all corrected out within 1 minute of one another.

Beautiful weather and consistent winds were key to 60 boats having a great weekend of racing at the 81st Fourth of July Invitational Regatta.

Handling Registration was Joann Hyer and Joan St. John who did a wonderful job with registration and welcoming.

Boatyard police and general repairmen Steve Loudon, Will Walters, Hughie Larkin & Roy Seaberg were cool in the chaos that abounds with rigging and launching dinghies.

A special thanks to Callie O’Connell, Mary & Emma Haedrich, Paulina & Angelia Crisci, Devon Berdolt, and Kendall & Chandler McMillan who jumped in and took over the brisk business of selling the Tee shirts.

Division 1 was led by Ken Goodwin, assisted by Dan McMillan, Warren Light, Ed Miller & Lauren Goodwin aboard the Annette Too - graciously lent by Aileen Eppig to serve as Race Committee boat

Division 2 was run by Pete Capitain with Sandralee Capitain, Michelle Grover, Larry Olsen, Roger Daisley, Colleen Kelly, Debbie Goodwin, Debbie & Frank Dolan all aboard Terry & Lenny Jenik’s boat the Harbor Light – Yes that’s a lot of people but it’s a Mainship 390!

Division 3 was in the capable hands of Jack Morgan, Kathleen Farrell and Callie & Marty O’Connell aboard the O’Connell’s boat Kickin’ Back

While there were moderate winds on Saturday - Sunday came to remind us they can still pack a punch!  On Saturday we had Ken Matthes, Mark Stang & Sarah Schnorr, Bob Greene who told his family they were spending the day patrolling, Jack Albanese who was out jumping around the fleet helping where needed aboard the club’s Caravelle and Dr Tom Crimi with Bob Maddocks aboard who was late because of a run down battery, ran out of gas, lost the gas cap and still came out watched over Division 3!! With the breeze blowing in on Sunday, Engines were worked and overworked keeping the fleet safe.  Working hard on Sunday was Dave Hyer & Rick Latorre, Jill & Chuck Hoyler, Carl Gallian, Tom Reilly & John Behrens, Harry Manko & Rich Tesoro (who also did double duty shooting some phenomenal pictures & videos), and Tom Devine with John Holst as crew who did a standout job making sure everyone who went out to race came back in under their own power or under tow.  Special thanks to the Division 1 patrol boats who definitely earned their stripes with a Narrasketuck de-masting & a Flying Scott flipping on the last race and to Larry Schaefer & Andrew Simms who took the entire weekend to make this event run smoothly.

Marty O’Connell organized the Protest Committee with Jack Morgan and Russell Pearson serving on the committee.

The feeding of this ravenous bunch fell into the hands of Christine Mullé and Victoria McMillan, Judith Light, Joan Haedrich, Tesse Crisci, Kelly Berdolt, Melissa Seaberg, Rosemary Saganic, Jayne Manko and Diane Going.

Mike, Dennis and the rest of the Staff did a lot of the behind the scenes jobs to make this entire weekend a success. Thank you Staff.

Thank you to my co-chair Dan McMillan as well as Ken Goodwin and Pete Capitain both of whom I pestered along with Dan since last year & over the winter with numerous emails and ideas and who always seemed to keep me focused.

Thanks to all and if I forgot to mention anyone I am truly sorry.

Upcoming Regatta Events

Friday July 7th – Corinthian Race #2 start time 1900

SUNDAY July 22nd – BYC Governor’s Cup – start time 1200.

If you want to give sailing a try and don’t have any experience, please get in contact with me or just come down on one of these dates and we’ll get you on a boat.

SailingPete Capitain

Head Instructor, David Hyer, along with instructors Kyle Maguire, Caroline O'Hara, and Johanna Trupp has had a good start this season.  David, as many of you already know, was named as All-American Sailor by the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association.  Read the full story on the sailing page of the website.  Instructors like David are few and far between.  Take advantage of what he offers.  Also, speak with your kids to make sure they’re getting the most out of lessons and are taking direction to its best advantage.

The Bluejays are the training fleet for our junior sailors.  They take a lot of abuse and, this past season, have suffered from the accumulated wear.  You wouldn’t know it by looking at them now.  Some talented members have put in many hours getting the Bluejays into better shape than they've been in years.   Many thanks to Fiberglass fixers Jerry Dunnells and Marty O’Connell, Master mast straightener Kevin O’Brien,  Rub Rail mistress  Emma Allen and her dad, Bob. Thanks also to the masters of 5200, John Schroeder and Harry Manko, Handymen Larry Schaefer and Andrew Sims, and Mr’s. Fixit, Bob Grover and Dave Hyer.

Team RacingPete Capitain

Monday night team racing is going strong. The course is a relatively compact ‘N’ shape, and is positioned close to the T dock for viewing.  Come down for dinner and watch the races starting around 6:00 Monday nights.

This is an exciting event, both to race in and also to watch, as the red fleet of three boats battles the yellow fleet, also of three boats, for best overall team position.  Unlike regular races where it’s a race to the finish, the lead boats generally lurk at the rounding marks to hold off the opposition, and it makes for great viewing.

Interested in giving it a try?  This is an invitational event.  With more than 12 competitors, we’ll round robin through the fleet. You must be an accomplished sailor for this event and, of course, know the racing rules. Contact Jimi Grover at j.grover@wi.k12.ny.us
