Entertainment – submitted by Dick Patwell, Jack Albanese & Gary Guarino

OPENING DAY PARTY

The Opening Day Party will be held on Saturday, May 24th and is being hosted by Kristine and John Calamari (587-7021).  The party is from 7 to 11 p.m. and costs $35 per person.  Please make your reservations early.  New members will be welcomed by the Board of Governors in the Commodore’s Room at a pre-party reception from 6 to 7 p.m. and will be guests of the Board at the Opening Day Party. Volunteers are needed to help at the bar for the party.  Please call Kristine if you can tend bar for an hour or so during the party.  DRESS – Jacket and Tie

Please remember Commissioning Ceremonies start at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday as we all gather around the flagpole.  Come on down and meet your fellow members as the Board, both past and present, raise the flag for another successful season at the BYC. The crowd then moves over to the JYC and our youth will begin their season with a bang and the raising of their flag as well.  All of this activity will be followed by hot dogs, beer and soda at no charge.  Come on down and greet the 2008 season.

At the conclusion of Commissioning Day ceremonies the pool will be opened for the season.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

As we all know, BYC operates through its member/volunteers.  As of this moment, it appears that we do not have volunteers to host and crew the Beef Steak Dinner that is scheduled for June 7th, the Fathers Day Brunch scheduled for June 15th, and the South of the Border Party scheduled for July 12th.  The Entertainment Committee will not chase members to volunteer. If no one volunteers to host and crew any of these events, they will unfortunately have to be dropped from the social calendar. Please call Dick Patwell (587-4206) if you are willing to either host or help out.  If you are a newer member and want to help out, please call Dick.  He will help align you with some other more seasoned hosts.  Don’t be shy.  These parties are what make the BYC.  Thank you in advance for your help.

On Monday May 26th the BYC welcomes the South Bay Cruising Club to the Club for their Commissioning Day ceremonies.  This longstanding tradition, always held at the BYC, has been in existence since 1951.  The SBCC does not have facilities of their own, so what better place than the Babylon Yacht Club to kick off the season!  Beginning Monday morning they’ll begin to fill the basin with sailboats of various sizes and rigs, bringing back sights from years ago, and quite a sight it is.

Even though the SBCC members are guests of the BYC, they are afforded the same courtesies as members of the Club during their Commissioning Day ceremonies.  Please be sure to extend them some BYC hospitality.

Board News

The Board of Governors would like to announce Roderick Bisson and Virginia Horan have joined the Board.  Rod will be chairing Juniors and Co-chairing Sailing.  Ginny will be Co-Chairing  Entertainment.

Renovation Report – submitted by John Bell

The club renovation capital improvement project has been unique in that club members had input on the planning and financing via membership meetings.  The assessment levied allowed us to borrow less, thus saving money on interest payments.  This project had three components: foundation, carpentry, and grounds. The major expense was the engineering and foundation repair.  Collaboration between the consulting engineer and Ronback Marine provided a solution that will allow the building to be leveled as needed.  The helical pile design is a great improvement over the old locust post system and should support the club for years to come.  After the foundation work was complete, porch posts, skirting, and shingles were replaced.  New windows were added to the porch area, replacing the old non-functioning sliding windows.  This aspect of the project required special attention to detail to maintain the Nantucket style of architecture and preserve the character of the club. Finally, landscaping work was done in areas that were affected by heavy machinery.  Special thanks go to Donna and Mike Nicolosi who contributed crushed stone to help with parking lot repair.  Their generous donation is appreciated.

Below are the expenses incurred for materials and labor to date.

Foundation

$173,127

Carpentry

$  46,482

Landscape

$    2,600

Total

$222,209

At the June Spring Membership Meeting there will be a detailed presentation of the project expenditures.

Secretary’s Report – submitted by Joe Mullé (Interim Secretary)

I would like to thank the membership for the corrections, comments, and help in getting the yearbook completed; we were able to make changes up to May 2nd.  It was flattering to see members take a vested interest in this endeavor.  (Thank-you All!!!!!!! – JM)

Yearbooks will be available during Commissioning Day Weekend by the Manager’s Office.

The Newsletter is currently being printed in a standard paper format in an attempt to save publication costs.  The printer has a new machine that folds, collates and staples but only for 8½ x 11 sized-paper.  Before we make complete the switch we’ll be printing the next few editions in this format, if you have a comment please let me know.

Currently 168 members have signed up to receive newsletters and notices by email.  Thank-you!!

Regatta Newssubmitted by Joe Mullé & Gary Guarino

It’s been pretty quiet on the “Regatta-front”.  Currently it’s more paperwork and lining up volunteers but that will change once the season begins.  We have a lot of sailing this season and look forward to seeing boats back on the bay.

Some important Regatta dates:

Saturday May 31st  – GSBYRA Men’s, Women’s & Match Racing Championships – BYC is the race committee for these events @ the BYC in Flying Scots.  Make sure you swing by to support your crews.

Friday June 6th - Corinthian Race #1 - start time 1900; this will be the kick off of the hotly contested 2008 Corinthian Series.

Friday June 13thBabylon Cup – A South Bay Cruising Club organized race with a post race event at the BYC.  Start time is 1830.  BYC sailors are encouraged to participate in this well attended event.

We’re in the final stretches of completing plans for the 82nd BYC July 4th Invitation on July 5th & 6th, and we are still in need of volunteers both shore side and afloat, if you could devote one day out of the weekend it would sure help us out and we’ll make sure you have a fun time at it!  More details will be in the next newsletter.

Sailing Program – Ken Goodwin

Sailing instruction starts June 30th this year.  Registration is Wednesday, May 28th, from 7:00 PM to 10:00 PM and Saturday, May 31st, from 10:00 AM till Noon.  Sailors new to the program must pass a swim test.  To participate, sailors must have reached their eighth birthday by December 31, 2008.

The swim test for sailing lessons is Saturday, June 14, 9:00 to 11:00. It is a one-time test for new sailors only.  Please dress your sailor in the type of clothes and shoes that he/she will be wearing during sailing lessons, and fit them with a good quality PFD.  They are required to jump into the water at the floating dock, swim in to the finger dock, swim back, remove their PFD, tread water, and then put the PFD back on.

Head Instructor, David Hyer, will be heading up the sailing staff again this year.  David is a year round Assistant Sailing Coach at SUNY Maritime College while he’s pursuing his Masters’ Degree.  Instructors with David’s qualifications are rare, and parents should take advantage of what he has to offer our sailors.

David will hold a parent-teacher meeting on Wednesday, May 14th, at 7:30 PM.  This is the time to ask questions about the sailing program and to give suggestions.

We’re excited about a new class we’re adding this year – “Bring Your Own, Sail Your Own Optimists.”  It will consist of sailing a triangle course and developing race capabilities.  Participation in Wednesday night races and Junior Invitational events at other clubs is expected.  You must bring your own Optimist to participate in this class.

Many thanks to the following members who helped rig the sailing fleet this past weekend.  In two hours we had the boats upright on their dollies with the masts up!

Adult Sailingsubmitted by Dave Hyer

The 2008 Adult Sailing Program is under way for the second week of June.  As of now, Hugh Larkin is working like a true Sailor and is expected to have his boat in prime condition for the start of this sailing season.

As of May 12th there are five individuals who have signed up, so if you are planning on sailing this year send please me an email at els1ins@aol.com.  Looking forward to seeing everyone on Commissioning Day.

Planting Committee

True to BYC tradition, a hardy group of gardeners braved cold, damp, un-spring-like weather to spruce up the grounds in anticipation of opening day. The clean-up crew; consisting of Christine Mullé, Sandralee Capitain and Margaret Bell was assisted by Andrew Hemingway, who dropped by the club and was drafted to rip out dead shrubs and edge beds.  On the following Saturday, the green thumb brigade arrived with trowels in hand to fill the flowerbeds and plant the pots.  Thanks to Linda Devine, Debbie Goodwin, Jill Hoyler, Mary Grover, Mary Lazley, Barbara Maher, Christine Mullé, Sandralee Capitain, and Margaret Bell colorful annuals and perennials will brighten the grounds this season.  Master Gardener Jerry Dunnells applied the Hollytone while Tom Devine, Peter Capitain and John Bell moved heavy pots and bags of soil.  A very special thank you goes to Chris Sicignano who redesigned the perennial bed by the kitchen, provided all the plant material, and did the major part of the cleanup.
